Do The Third-party Usb Cables Work ? (corrected)

Recommended Posts

There are many postings related to problems with third party USB cables (whereas all the serial cables seem to be working fine irrespective of their origin). Many people also ask if they should buy the USB cable from Reliance or from some third party. This poll is to collect all the experience data in one place and provide guidance to others.

In any case, please mention your Handset, (USB) Cable-make (Prolific etc.), Cable-price, Cable-vendor and Operating system. Whatever details you can provide.

Please go through all the options before selecting one.

Options:

Option 1: Yes, the cable works. I am using RConnect dialer. The installation was absolutely painless. Cable works for both RConnect and Data Sync (including contacts etc and multimedia - wallpapers, ringtones etc.)

Option 2: Yes, same as above. But had to tweak something before the installation worked. (Provide details)

Option 3: Yes, the cable works. But could not use RConnect dialer software. Installed the modem separately and using the dialer bundled in my OS or some other dialer.

Option 4: Yes, the cable works. But the driver provided by the cable-vendor did not work. I had to use the driver from some other source.

Option 5: Yes and No. Everything was working. But after I changed something (this could be installing a patch) it stopped working. Can not reinstall the modem.

Option 6: No, it didn't work. Installed the modem but can not connect. Data sync works (partially or completely).

Option 7: No, it didn't work. Modem instalation failed. Data sync works (partially or completely).

Option 8: No, nothing works. No RConnect, No Data sync either.

If your answer is none of the above please select the option that is the closest to your experience and provide details.

I'm using USB cable from Digicomputers which i purchased on Bazee.Com. the cable as such works fine but at some places at my shop it dsiconnects every few minutes, dont know what the problem. Also in general also many a times it disconnects without any reason. I was using a serial cable previously that was working totally fine without any problems. I went for usb cable because it also charges the mobile while I'm using it as my LG Rd 2030 has a very very low battery. Now i think i must have gone for a cable with serial port and a usb port for just charging. Such cables are also available at bazee.com

Nokia 2280 RIM

Got generic DKU5 from Fleebay (US) for about Rs 800 eq.

Uses Prolific Usb to Serial chip. Downloaded Prolific driver and got it working on two laptops with RIM phone.

Worked fine until a pin broke (physical damage). My fault.

Picked up another generic DKU5 cable from a cell phone shop next to RIM WebWorld center. Cost me Rs750 for it but cable is made in China and has English-Chinese manual. This cable uses TI USB-to-Serial chip. Downloaded USB to serial driver from TI and got it working on same two laptops with RIM phone..

I heard from few local folks that a locally assembeled cable availble for Rs 150 but I have yet to see one!! If I do see one I will sure to purchase an extra.
