AIDS or rather i would call it HIV is a virus that lives in blood, i shall first tell you difference between HIV n AIDS

HIV is a virus which goes in blood and has meaning of:

Human – isolated to the human species

Immuno-Deficiency – Lacking the ability to fight off infectious agents

Virus – a disease causing agent

AIDS - advanced stage of HIV infection that leads to AIDS.

Acquired – must do something to contract, its not been always there

Immune – ability to fight off infectious agents

Deficiency – lack of

Syndrome – cluster of symptoms that are Characteristic for a disease

Since the time HIV has shown up it has been become a major concern for all with 2 balls, that's because its against physiology or nature of a Man to IGNORE PARAAYEE STREE / NAARI, so there is one way out just dont do it.

There are 2 ways out Ethical / Un-Ethical or moral / unmoral or what ever you call it:

1) Ethical - become Ram Bhagawan and stick to Sita then people will start praying to you also - because you are doing a tough job - bloody hell of it.

2) Un- Ethical - you can go on admiring as that wont kill any one as long as you stay away from Body Fluids its safe to be chipku to your secret GF, so in modern terms you can have a GF but dont exchange Fluids - it can be lethal.

so lets See Do's First as its more that you should not do so i shall cover it later:

Lets see HIV virus: Its a infective particle that needs nutrition too, this it derives from surrounding fluids which is also protective to it to. So it can not survive outside fluid - the fluid being Blood and few more body fluid.

SO if you ask me in one line i would say - You can do any thing you want as long as you are keeping away from any contact with any body fluid

Do's

you wont get HIV by

Touching hand shaking or hugging

you can comfortably do this as there is no exchange of body fluid, if the person has cut or nicks which is oozing then its a different story. you can also take care of a HIV/AIDS patient as its not transmitted by casual touch.

Sharing bathroom or toilet

there is a big big misconception that HIV or any infection gets transmitted by it, germs dont have claws that they will cling to your stream and climb up.

Coughing, saliva or sneezing

as long as some one does dose it on your face and there is no blood on it

Eating together or sharing utensils

Swimming pools

Sharing clothes

Mosquito bite, Insect bite or houseflies

Patient caring

Always remember to wear latex gloves and despo masks while it.

Embarrassing or kissing (social)

I dont know whats social kissing but keep away from saliva, although saliva DOES not have HIV per-se but there might be any nick in mouth with minimal bleeding in gums.

Right from beginning, there is a Widespread belief that AIDS is ultimately not curable and death is certain...It's only a question, how long...

This may be the case in very early days say 10-15 years back, but after that i read that there are many new effective drugs invented...

City doctor makes breakthrough in fight against aids

Parel scientist finds a way to block the virus from spreading in cases of sexual transmission

In the global battle against the spread of HIV/AIDS, a major victory has been scored in a rather non-descript lab in a narrow, crowded lane of central Mumbai.

Dr A H Bandivdekar, senior scientist and deputy director of the National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health (NIRH), has developed a compound that blocks the virus from growing and multiplying inside a woman's body in cases where it has been sexually transmitted.

The path-breaking discovery, almost certain to shake up the anti-HIV/AIDS research across the world, can take the risk of HIV infection out of the lives of commercial sexworkers, thus putting a brake on its alarming proliferation. It can also help women married to HIV+ve men lead a normal life.

However, entering Dr Bandivdekar's third-floor office-cum-lab at NIRH's Parel facility on Saturday afternoon, one did not get any sense of history being made.

Dressed in a faded polo shirt and loose-fitting khakis paired with floaters, he treated with utter contempt any questions on how soon his discovery could be made commercially available. He'd rather, he said, focus on the ongoing in-vitro trials. "Commercial availability of this anti-dote is not my focus...it's not even my lookout," he said.

But Dr Bandivdekar is already the talk of the small anti-AIDS research community. On Friday, he made a presentation in Panaji in Goa to a "very appreciative set of scientists" from across the world. His research, in its various stages, has already been published in three annual reports of the Indian Council of Medical Research.

What the 'Bandivdekar compound' (he will not discuss its composition till the patent is cleared) does is it tames Mannose Receptor, a protein found in women's vaginal epithelial cells that binds with the virus and helps it grow and invade others parts of the body. When the Mannose Receptor is controlled at a certain level or is eliminated completely, the HIV virus, in absence of a carrier, is rendered ineffectual.

The beginning

Till 2003, when Dr Bandivdekar was in very initial stages of his research, the only protein that was known to bind with HIV and make it grow and multiply was CD4, found in abundance in blood cells. But that related to HIV transmission through blood. There was very little clarity on sexually transmitted HIV.

His research first showed that the male sperm is CD4 negative. He later found that the vaginal epithelial cells too were CD4 negative.

Now, a big question loomed - if CD4 acts as a carrier when HIV enters a human body through blood, which protein plays the role of CD4 when HIV is sexually transmitted?

The answer, that came to Dr Bandivdekar after many years of research and experiments was - Mannose Receptor. And then began the race to find an anti-dote. "The compound is ready now. We have no doubts about its efficacy. Clinical trials will begin this year in the US, when we will use it on rhesus monkeys," he said.

During his research, Dr Bandivdekar looked at 40 sexually active, discordant couples (HIV+ve males and HIV-ve women) and found that very low percentage of vaginal epithelial cells in these women had Mannose Receptor. "Since Mannose Receptor is responsible for carrying the virus beyond the vagina and then letting it multiply, these women have been free of HIV even after regular, unprotected sexual contact with their husbands," he said.

A 40-year-old TV actor, who was part of this study, tested positive in 2004. He was married and had a 10-year-old son then. However, to his relief, tests showed his wife and son both were free of HIV.

It was later revealed that less than 10 per cent of his wife's vaginal epithelial cells had Mannose Receptor. "Though I tested positive, the knowledge that my wife and son were safe gave me strength. The news gave me confidence to fight this disease, now I am doing well with my family's support," he said.

Mixed reaction

Within the scientific and medical community, there is mixed reaction to Bandivdekar's discovery. One of the major concern is HIV's propensity to mutate. "There are lots of other factors involved in the non-transmission of HIV from one partner to the other. In HIV, there are three sub types - A, B and C.

In discordant couples, we have found type C virus not getting transmitted to the partner. However, we need more detailed studies," said Dr Preeti Mehta, head of microbiology, KEM Hospital.

"Of course these findings give us new hope, it will take our research to another level. But it's too early for us to let our guard down. In counselling, we still ask discordant couples to use protection when having sex.

The virus mutates very fast and that is a constant worry," said Dr Alka Deshpande, head of Anti-Retroviral Therapy at JJ Hospital.

Dr Amita Joshi, head of microbiology at JJ, offered a similar reaction. "It will be difficult to be able to comment on this research at this stage. This is quite interesting, but I need to go through details," she said.

THERE is always claims all over but i told you dont believe unless its from a multi billionaire, i am not doubting any ones efforts - results come from it but when we talk here we have to live in present sure we can live in moon some day but today is day for concrete jungle -

these research r done under artificial conditions that give good results but when they go for clinical trial things show up, a prostitute or a youth with boiling hormones wont stop only @ vagina thinking of receptors, he will definitely go ahead sooner or later. in my above post i mentioned keep away from body fluids this means - blood - and vagina being a busy destination has many small cuts enough to ooze small blood,

so my friends - RIGHT now TODAY and till day after there is only one thing that works ...

Unprotected sexual intercourse with infected person (either heterosexual or homosexual)

there are reports that transmission rate is more in homosexual then in heterosexual

Transfusion of infected blood or blood products

this is most disastrous as this can have been stopped and not done, friends when ever you go to seek blood in a blood bank always remember to check HIV and HbS Ag in it, and dont pressurize the doctor or attendant to do it too fast - he knows what he is doing let him finish, otherwise he will skip things and you will be in trouble.

Infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, birth process and through breast feeding

Use of infected needles and instruments without sterilization or sharing of needles and syringes by HIV drug addicts

Always insist on New Untempered syringe and tubes - never reuse and see to it that they destroy it after single use.

Friends its very difficult to get HIV unless you want to - HIV virus is very delicate

Can HIV spread through Saliva? Case has doctors thinking

HIV, according to experts, is not normally transmitted through saliva. Transmission of the virus from the host is possible when saliva is mixed with blood.

In an unusual case, which should make the experts revisit their earlier position, a 50-year-old man has contacted HIV through his son's saliva.

The man was bitten by his 32-year-old HIV positive stepson. But the latter did not have ulcers in his mouth, which usually leads to saliva getting mixed with blood.

Documented instances speak of the presence of the virus in saliva, but transmission takes place only in the above case.

"The son had pulled out the thumb nail of his father. Since the wound was raw, the virus could enter easily," said Dr Alaka Deshpande, who runs the Centre of Excellence ART clinic at JJ hospital. The patient had come to her last year.

To understand the case better, the doctors wanted to verify if the father carried the same virus that has infected his son. Deshpande then sent the patient to National Institute of Research in Reproductive Health for further testing.

Dr AH Bandivdekar and Dr Shivaji Jadhav from the department of biochemistry and virology did gene sequencing of the HIV virus in the father and the son's blood and concluded that both viruses were the same. "This confirmed the source of the HIV virus. Also, the son's saliva had a high viral load which may have also caused the transmission," said Dr Deshpande.

Unfortunately, the father was not given post exposure prophylaxis (PEP), a short-term anti-retroviral treatment given to reduce the likelihood of HIV infection after potential exposure. The family doctor told him that the virus cannot spread via saliva.

"He was admitted to JJ hospital for meningitis. After four days, he told us about this history. His blood was then sent for HIV testing and he was discovered HIV positive," said Deshpande. She stressed that family physicians should know about HIV infected human bites and should treat it with PEP, in which the treatment should start within two hours of the potential exposure.

The father's viral load was more than 20 lakh then. "He was treated as per US guidelines so that the virus does not spread to other organs. After treatment his viral load came down." This case study was presented at the International Conference on Emerging Frontiers and Challenges in HIV/AIDS Research by Dr Jadhav to show that HIV infected human bites should be treated with PEP.
