Honest 836 Report post Posted December 8, 2010 Android phones can choke network HELSINKI: Users of Google's Android phones, such as Samsung's Galaxy S, use more data services than those with other smartphones, threatening to choke wireless network capacity, an industry study showed. The growing popularity of Android-operated phones -- made by companies including Asian vendors HTC Corp and Samsung Electronics -- comes as handsets look set to overtake computers as the most used device for browsing the Web. Wireless operators are keen on raising revenue from Internet browsing and the social networking boom as revenue from traditional voice calls decline, but they are facing increasingly congested networks. Fearful of losing customers, only a few operators have publicly admitted to the problem of keeping pace with data traffic, but the majority is experiencing difficulties. The study by telecom network technology firm Arieso showed that customers with Android phones are creating more data traffic mostly due to better cameras and video recorders, and software for editing the footage. "When more could be done, more tends to be done," said Arieso's Chief Technology Officer Michael Flanagan. "Smartphone subscriptions are rising and so to is subscriber appetite for mobile data. It's a trend that's set to continue." Android software, offered free to cellphone vendors, has grown strongly since coming to market two years ago. Globally Android usage ranked second in the last quarter, beating Apple's iPhone and Research In Motion, but still trailing Nokia's Symbian. Analysts expect it to become the leading operating system next year. Mobile data usage has rocketed since the introduction of Apple Inc's iPhone in 2007, with usage of data networks seen roughly doubling each year. "What operators are really suffering from is the fact that popularity of smartphones came too quickly," said Lance Hiley, VP of market strategy at telecoms network technology provider Cambridge Broadband Networks. Telecoms gear makers Ericsson, Nokia Siemens and Alcatel-Lucent, which have struggled in recent years in the face of aggressive pricing by Asian rivals, expect rising data traffic to lead to new orders. raccoon 53 Report post Posted December 9, 2010 The news report is from Helsinki! I don't think it is that relevant in the Indian context. How many people use Android or even data on their mobiles here?? A lot of people I know don't even know what is Android. That said, when I was facing failed connects with my Docomo, their tech. dept. told me it is because of congestion in their data network, and will be rectified soon. csmart 472 Report post Posted December 9, 2010 every1 knows tht indian networks are chocked due to spectrum and telcos.. besides, data is new avenue for revenue. if they can support demand for data, i can be huge cash generator... but the prob is that telcos want to earn without investing.. earlier they blamed iPhone and now android... This must be the only industry which is worried about AN INCREASE IN DEMAND FOR ITS SERVICES ! Other businesses would die for such an opportunity of high demand where you can increase capacity and make money. But Telcos seem to be just running on Valuations through Spectrum Hoarding/Banking and just doing the minimum required to legally remain a teleco. Indian ones have not stooped down to that level YET. But the day may not be far off even Indian telcos adopt billing like Electricity Providers - more you use higher the rate. Unlike other industries where more you use lesser the rate (bulk discounts) Essentially, once companies become too big and powerful enough with their lobbying it starts making more financial sense to milk your customers without investing anything. Currently, the extreme competition in India was restricting such actions but there should be some 'consolidation' soon and then it'll be 3-4 big players doing market gouging. Something similar is happening to Airline fares right now (though I don't agree with Govt interfering with the pricing - only that seats booked/remaining should be transparently displayed - if govt starts regulating it then it'll be like trains - all tkts will sell out on day of opening of bookings) Edited December 9, 2010 by ami1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Seems Nokia and Apple have joined hands to malign ANDROID iPhone iOS 4.2 Supports New Technology To Minimize Network Congestion If you are facing bad network coverage, call drops and poor battery management with your smartphone, than here is good news for you ! Tests by Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) have shown that new technology called Network Controlled Fast Dormancy (NCFD) makes the network and the handset work together to create the best conditions for smartphones to work quickly, yet have a long battery life and minimize network congestion, call drops etc. The NSN conducted the above Test on latest Apple iPhone iOs 4.2 software device which supports this technology called Network Controlled Fast Dormancy. The Smartphones connect constantly to the network, often driven by applications like FaceBook and others, or Online Gaming, checking emails, tweeting or status update via the smartphone. But this creates a huge amount of signaling as smartphones switch from an idle mode to an active state so that they can interact with the network, for example to get emails or pull in the latest tweets. All this disconnecting and reconnecting takes time and can cause a frustratingly slow network response. On the other hand, leaving the smartphone in an active mode all the time drains the battery very quickly. To overcome the problem NSN introduced a method that, instead of putting the handset into idle or keeping it always active, keeps the handset in an intermediate state. From here, a smartphone can wake up much more quickly and needs to send far fewer signals to and from the network to start a data connection. You get a fast network response and a longer battery life. The new Apple software release supports this way of working on networks that have the technology implemented. World's largest handset makers Nokia also implemented the technology in its smartphones earlier this year. So now the two handset makers that account for half of all new smartphones in the world contribute to an improved user experience and cost reduction for operators.
