Olive To Launch First Indian HSPA+ Android Phone

Recommended Posts

OLIVE to Join the Android Phone Bandwagon

Although Olive was the first Indian company to make a tablet, they did not manage to get a lot of fan-following. They might be looking to have another go at the market by coming out with Android handsets next year.

The news doing the rounds tells us that Olive will be launching smartphones based on Android 2.2 Froyo in the first week of March 2011. According to their chairman Arun Khanna, there will be a whole range of smartphones that will hit the market. One interesting point we saw was that one of these phones will be a challenger to the Galaxy S, possibly a large touchscreen device. Of course, it shouldn’t be any bigger than 5 inches as that wouldn’t make it a phone anyway.

It will be interesting to see how they fare with mobile phones. The Olivepad just about hit the mid-range tablet segment but has not done too well. Hopefully their range of Android smartphones will change things around for them.

Android with regular keypad & 3G? .. may be we can see these!

If you try your fingers on capacitative touch screen, you can't be friendly with resistive touch screen! Olive must come with 3G smartphones with QWERTY or capacitative touch screen!

In entire Olive Product Portfolio, most of them are good designs with some unique features.

Olive has tie up with some 24 network operators worldwide and operations in many countries.

One can expect some good Android handsets from them compared to a Micromax or Intex.

Olive to Launch First Indian HSPA+ Android Phone

Set to be unveiled on February 9

In end-December 2010, we reported that Olive Telecom promised to bring the Google Android 2.2 OS based phone range in India. Sticking to its words, Olive Telecom is going to launch India's first HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Packet Access and technically 4G) phone running Android on February 9. We've managed to sneak in an invite for the conference. However, there are very less details on the Olive's Android device specifications and form factor as of now.

Arun Khanna, CEO for Olive Telecom, said the company plans to introduce Android 2.2 Froyo based smartphones by March 2011. In India, Android 2.2 Froyo based devices have just started pouring in from major handset makers and many are expected in the coming months.

As per the invite, Olive would be unveiling the first Indian HSPA+ based smartphone. In India, we already have HTC Desire HD priced at Rs. 26,399 approximately and Desire Z for around Rs. 24,999. The HSPA+ standard offers data connection speeds at up to 14.4Mbps download and 5.76Mbps upload. Also note that Qualcomm's president for India and South Asia would be present at the event and hence it makes us think if Olive's Android based phone will carry Qualcomm's 800MHz Scorpion core based MSM7x30 processor or the 1GHz MSM8x55 processor. In either case, the phone would be capable of supporting up to 12 megapixel camera and 720p HD recording if enabled.

Olive's HSPA+ Network supporting Android phone does raise concerns about network support. However, with the 3G roll out happening country wide, several may be able to make the best of the both the phone and the network. We'll update this space with more details as and when we get them.

As per the below article the phone is based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread

The smartphone from Olive is likely to have the latest version of Android operating system (Android 2.3) and will support downlink speeds of up to 14 Mb/s.

Olive Telecom is all set to becoming the first Indian handset manufacturers to launch HSPA+ (Enhanced High-Speed Packet Access) smartphone on 9th February.

The smartphone from Olive is likely to have the latest version of Android operating system (Android 2.3) and will support downlink speeds of up to 14 Mb/s. This speed allows users to download a 400Mb feature-length movie within thirty seconds.

Faster data speeds on HSPA+ handset can definitely improve the mobile web experience for smartphone owners, but only if it is backed up by a robust network which has to be provided by the service provider.

The handset is likely to be offered bundled with an Aircel connection and customers can expect attractive data plans from the service provider.

Here is the official press release.

http://www.olivetelecom.in/olive-news.html

It's an awesome phone at this price point.

:signthankspin: :signthankspin: :signthankspin:

I'm bit disappointed though, when olive has gone for MSM8255, it could have easily opted for MSM8655.

That would have brought in EVDO Rev A/B in addition to HSPA+ at little extra cost.

More on Olive Telecom's OliveSmart V-S300

So we found out yesterday about Olive Telecom launching their first smartphone in India, the Gingerbread-powered OliveSmart V-S300 at a price of Rs. 19,999. Naturally, this piqued a lot of interest among the community and people do want to know more about the device. So if you’re one of them, you’ve come to the right place.

img_297602_olive_olivesmart_450x360.jpg

First off, the OEM – we know Olive don’t manufacture their devices themselves, so what exactly is the true form of the OliveSmart? The most likely answer, like many of our readers commented, seems to be the Huawei Ideos X6, which has… wait for it… an identical specsheet. Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255, Adreno 205, the works. Only, there’s a slight hitch; the Huawei Ideos X6 comes pre-loaded with Android 2.2 Froyo, not 2.3 Gingerbread.

That seems to be confirmed by the mockup image Olive sent us and the hands-on preview posted over at Gigejts, which both show the phone running on Froyo (2.2.1). Olive still went all out in announcing Gingerbread for the phone, so we hope both for their sake and ours that they don’t mess it up between now and the release date next month.

img_297612_olivesmart_froyo_450x360.jpg

Another aspect worth talking about is Viewsonic. You’ll remember the ViewPad 7 and the OlivePad – Android tablets which were launched last year – were identical devices. That situation seems to be repeating itself again, this time with the OliveSmart V-S300 and the ViewPad 4. Both devices look extremely similar, and I’m in no doubt hilarity would once again ensue if Viewsonic decides to price their version of the phone higher, like they did with the ViewPad.

While all this information is well and good and might pricking the enthusiasm bubbles of some, the fact remains that Olive have promised a Gingerbread phone with excellent specs at a very attractive price. I, still maintain this move will do the Indian smartphone market a world of good, and I hope you guys do too. Now I just hope this device lives up to its specs and performs well.
