Apple iPad in India

Recommended Posts

Apple to Bring iPad in India on January 28

Just nine months after the US launch and three months away from the launch of the next generation model.

Just when almost every Indian who ever aspired to buy the iPad officially in India had given up hope and gone for the gray market route, Apple decided to finally launch it in India. According to The Telegraph, the iPad will be launched in India on January 28, which is just four days away from today. The iPad will be available in India only through Apple's premium retailers.

According to The Telegraph, the Wi-Fi version of the iPad will be priced somewhere between Rs. 26,000 to Rs. 33,000. The 3G+Wi-Fi version will be priced somewhere between Rs. 33,000 to Rs. 44,000. Each version comes in three capacities, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.

The iPad itself requires no introduction. By now, almost everyone has heard of or used the iPad in India. We are just disappointed that Apple took this long to launch the iPad here. With the second generation iPad launch just three months away from now, does it mean that we won't be getting it on time as well? Something tells us the answer is "Yes" .

The Apple iPad hits India officially

The Apple iPad is now officially available in India. Run around the corner to the nearest Apple store and you can pick up a model with a warantee, at Indian prices, paying in Indian rupees.

Pricing starts as low as Rs 27,900, going up to Rs 44,900. These are in line with the prices at which the same models are available in Europe, which means that Apple has forgone its usual strategy of setting a high premium. But then, it's done that with the latest range of the MacBook, the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro and the iMac too.

Importantly, unlike in many European countries, both the wi-fi as well as the wi-fi-plus-3G versions on sale. Moreover, the iPad comes unlocked, unlike the iPhone, which means it will accept SIM cards from any service-provider.

With its official launch, the iPad should now be available to a wider audience. The now-famous App Store, which recently topped 10 billion downloads, has already boosted iPad usage in a number of innovative ways. Games, utilities, communication tools, newspapers, magazines, websites and TV channels, in particular, are extremely popular on the iPad.

Unfortunately, Apple's e-book store, iBooks, remains out of bounds for users from India, robbing the iPad of one of its most exciting uses. However, readers can download and use the Kindle app for the iPad, which will enable them to buy e-books from India too.

The iPad will compete in India with the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Olivepad, among others. With its reputation preceding it, it has already evoked price-cuts from rivals - the Samsung Galaxy Tab, for instance, is now available at Rs 29,500, down from the launch price of Rs 36,499.

Retailers expect a small initial rush to buy the iPad, followed by steady sales.

Apple iPad prices

Wi-Fi - 16GB: Rs 27,900. 32GB: Rs 32,900. 64GB: Rs 37,900

Wi-Fi + 3G - 16GB: Rs 34,900. 32GB: Rs 39,900. 64GB: Rs 44,900

Almost all mobile companies treat India as dumping ground for their older models.

Apple dumbs current version of their phones/netbooks/tablets just 2-3 months prior to the launch next version in US.

RIM always dumbs buggy versions of their blackberries just 1 month prior to launch their bug-fixed versions in US.

Only Korean companies (Samsung & LG) have closer launches in India against other developed markets.

Unless we as Indians boycott buying such obsolete devices, these US/European companies will continue to show their 'white skin is superior' mentality.

^^ there is no major company that has established their manufacturing unit in India in terms or electronics, people with capability like notion ink struggle to export and get certification when done they dont have back support or hands to get them up - they just work to show US company they can and later sell it to them recover their money.

unless there is a RnD and manufacturing going on in India we can not expect rates to come down and get new products as they come not as a dump ground

Why any one would manufacture such thing in India?

IMO, India is loosing its manufacturing edge, what ever it has right now is slowly loosing its ground due to increasing capital cost, inefficient work force and complicated taxation.
