TATA Sky+ HD PVR @3999/- - Is this a game changer for Tata Sky?

Recommended Posts

Enjoying Star Cricket HD and ESPN HD on Tata Sky+ HD PVR in True Dolby Digital Surround Sound 5.1.... Channels 406 (ESPN HD) & 414 (Star Cricket HD)....Watched Opening Ceremony in HD; superb picture quality; both are outputting Dolby digital Sound, though TRUE DD 5.1 is coming only through Star Cricket HD where the speech is coming through centre speakers and rest surround sound... next broadcast will be of the matches...

Its 24m for HD boxes and 12m for standard STB as according to them 2 wires should come into dish for HD boxes but we are using splitter and the same functionality is being achieved with 1 wire setup in hd box...

Lucky you. As mentioned in another (not fully appropriate) thread TataSky HD is restricted to metros (and their environ) only. We upcountry yokels are deemed to be unfit for HD. I had also mentioned about the half-hourly hangs on the display/remote. dhiraj it was not just the Actve channels. This morning I found the system doing a full reload, took over five minutes. Obviously it found that there were too many bugs in the software. I checked on my second connection, it was functioning normally. Did not find the hanging problems after the 'self reboot'.

Thanks @dkaile..

I got the clarification from some customer care person in the TATA sky.

Yes, it's 12m for Normal boxes(either HD or Standard) and 24m for + boxes (Standard+ or HD+).

+ boxes require 2 inputs from minidish and hence its double(12m+12m) for those boxes for the same distance to set top box from minidish.

Anyway, they've discontinued Standard+ set top now.....

Just got my thing running today around 1:00 PM in time for India-Bangla match.

They've installed with 2 cables running from minidish to set top box.

Match was just awesome in HD.

I've not tested much so far.

But, whatever I've tested it worked to my satisfaction.

This is called TATA Sky+ HD effect...

Reliance Digital TV slashes its HD-DVR price to Rs. 3990/- from Rs.5990/-

http://www.reliancedigitaltv.com/hd_dvr.html

My experience so far is just marvelous...

TATA Sky customer care people are really educated on their domain and service is perfect on time.

It's does everything as I expected it to do so.

TATA Sky+ HD has another of its kind only from Reliance at present in the market.

But feature-wise TATA Sky+ HD blows away Reliance HD-DVR with its impeccable 500 GB space and 7.1 support.

Well this does not look like the game changer ... Serious issues in Standard Defination Quality... Read here the full thread http://goo.gl/X3qF7

Good Technical Reasons there why SD is so bad...If 99% of the channels (Only 3 are HD) is this bad... What's the use of recording? Garbage In Garbage Out!!! confused.gif

Then I actually compared SD quality of Tata Sky+ HD (At other place) with my Digital Set Top Box (Cable).... SD quality in Digital Set Top Box is much better...

Lucky as i was considering Tata Sky+ HD.... Now the search continues for the perfect HD DTH (With Good SD) !!!! Equivocado.gif

most of the guys at hifivision are "fools" (even their moderator) though I agree with your findings that 99% of the broadcast in India is in sd and NOT meant for any HD TV's being sold today; why people buy blindly is why marketing works in India;

HDTV's in India should be meant to enjoy HD content via BD disks or BD rips ONLY as of now; (they should make it mandatory to print a warning for the same on all the boxes of HDTV's... lolz)

Only watching HD broadcast of the World Cup is some consolation but watching other SD content on these TV's is a real pain to any purist...

And dont be fooled by the adverts that other service providers are much better (like they point on hifivision towards Dish and others - they are fools fools fools) - they are equally if not marginally better or worse...

Until they spruce up all or most channels to minimum 720p these hdtv's and boxes should be relegated to watching hd content only; But a start needs to be made and nothing happens overnight anywhere in the world and the hd broadcast of the world cup cricket is a start and a benchmark moment in indian television history as was the colour broadcast of the 1985 Asian Games.. more to come...

PS - Just Watched the 8 GB rip of Star Wars III - Revenge of the Sith - in full hd and dolby digital surround - It was pure nirvana...

I am on HD+ too, there is no basic difference between normal STB and HD+ for SD channels! though I feel the audio quality is better through HDMI instead of RC cables!

I can tell you that SD quality is worse as compared to SD content my BigTV. You dont need experts. Naked eye can tell you that. HD of course is ok. And by the way people have reported issues with the recorder like scheduling not working properly. I havent tested that myself though.

No ads while watching the matches in HD alone makes it worth it... lolz...

I too havnt tried recording much and I think I should have gone for the normal Hd box rather than + one...; maybe I will take out the hdd and use it separately to recover my money.... lolz...

....

The first start in India for HD content was last year during soccer world cup.

I completely agree that till the time Indian broadcasters are not upgrading for HD content, there is no point in watching the SD content on the HD panels. Till now, I am resisting the urge to buy LCD just because of this fact. HD TV buyers are actually paying more to see a substandard viewing experience. I dont want to be fooled my sheer marketing campaigns. I will wait till majority channels start on HD.

So what should one do to enjoy good SD (till we get more HD content) ?

Any upscaler or such gizmo would be useful ? Can that be connected to any of the STBs like Tata Sky etc.

Currently, watching SD on HDTVs is actually worse than on old CRT TVs. Please advise.
