Read on to find out the improvements Apple brought with the iPad 2 and how it could have been better iPad 2-Hits and Misses Apple, like any other corporate entity, is known to remain tight-lipped about any new product before it is officially launched. It is a necessary thing to do as any information leaked can be used to deliver a game-changer rival product by its competitors. There were very high expectations about the specifications of the iPad 2, months before its launch on March 2. So have those expectations been fulfilled, or have they left us high and dry? It's time to take a closer look. 1. Size: Thinner = Improvement The first generation iPad measured 246 x 190 x 13 mm. The iPad 2 has dimensions of 241.2 x 185.7 x 8.8 mm, which means that it is actually a lot slimmer (it seems almost flat, as against the bulge at the back of the original iPad) than its predecessor. We consider it an improvement. 2. Weight: A little lower = No improvement The iPad 2 weighs 601 grams, which is less than the original iPad weighing 680 grams, but it is still quite a bit to hold for too long. So this cannot be held really as much of an improvement. 3. Looks and style: Same as before = No improvement Barring some minor changes due to additional hardware such as cameras, the iPad 2 looks just like the original iPad. Apple could have done better here. It still features the old brushed aluminum and glass finish, so the carbon fiber body rumor was proven to be false. To clear our point here, take the example of the iPhone 4 - it looks dramatically different and dashing when compared to the iPhone 3GS. So there is no improvement in here. 4. Display: Same as before = No improvement It had been speculated months ago that the new iPad will sport a Retina Display, but that was not to happen. Both the iPads have the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit oleophobic IPS display, with a resolution of 1024x768, which means a ppi (pixels per inch) of 132. Obviously, there is no improvement in visibility in sunlight, as had been speculated. The aspect ratio is 4:3 and as before, you will see thick black borders at the top and bottom of the screen while watching widescreen videos. Incidentally, since the display remains the same, this also means that all the apps developed for the original iPad will run on the iPad 2 without any modification. 5. Performance: Faster = Improvement The iPad 2 can boast of better performance because it is powered by Apple's new 1GHz A5 dual-core processor as against the single core A4 processor used in the iPad. Although it is safe to assume that the performance will not double, there will be major performance gains for applications which can take advantage of the extra core (and we assure you that such applications will quickly start coming up in the App Store). Interestingly, the battery life has been maintained at 10 hours (probably due to optimized components and due to the lower power consumption of the A5 processor) as was the case before, so no change in there. Yet another reason for better performance is the 512MB RAM as against 256MB from the original iPad, which will be helpful while running multiple applications at the same time. 6. Graphics: Faster = Improvement While Apple has claimed that the iPad 2 has up to nine times the graphics performance as the original iPad, this may not be farther than the truth. The reason is that the iPad 2's graphics are powered by the Imagination's PowerVR SGX543MP, which is a multi-core powerful chip. 7. Topmost model storage capacity: Still stuck at 64GB = No improvement The highest flash memory storage capacity available in the iPad is still 64GB. This could definitely have been better because the cost of flash memory has dipped to less than half of what it was at the time of the launch of the original iPad. It would have been easily possible to bring out a 128GB model, facilitating storage of more apps, videos, music and other data, but was sadly ignored by Apple. And no, there is still no option to expand memory by a memory slot. And it also does not have any USB port to access external storage either. But that was expected, because Apple expects you to transfer data using only their iTunes application. Thunderbolt cannot be implemented in the iPad 2 because one of the basic requirements for Thunderbolt is PCI Express, which is absent in the iPad 2. 8. Dual cameras: Each for a different purpose = Improvement One of the most visible physical additions in the iPad 2 is the inclusion of two cameras - one at the front and the other at the rear. The front camera is a VGA resolution camera, meant to be used for FaceTime video calling applications. The camera on the rear is similar to that of the iPhone 4, with a 5x digital zoom, and capable of recording video at 720p HD resolution at 30fps. The still image megapixel specifications of this camera are not officially mentioned, but it has been found to be not more than 1 megapixel (similar to the rear camera on the iPod touch). This rear camera is just a bonus feature as we don't see you actually using the bulky iPad 2 to shoot videos or photos. 9. Support for GSM and CDMA: In a way, by means of two different iPad 2 versions = Improvement Weeks before its launch, it was rumored that the iPad 2 will be able to communicate with CDMA as well as GSM networks. So while this is indeed true, the iPad 2 has been introduced in two versions - CDMA and GSM, separately. This means that you cannot switch from GSM to CDMA or vice versa using the same iPad 2. 10. Price: Same as original iPad = Meets expectation When the iPad 2 was launched, Apple immediately set its price at the same level as the original iPad and reduced the price of the original iPad by $100. This means that you get better hardware at the same price point and if you are short on cash, you can always get the original iPad, which is still a good tablet. 11. Louder audio: Possibly = Possibly an improvement The iPad does not have loud speakers. Even listening to a podcast in a comparatively silent room from a few feet can be a frustrating experience. The iPad 2, on the other hand, features speaker grills, which look larger than the three tiny holes on the original iPad, giving rise to speculations that the audio may be sufficiently louder. We won't know about this until reviews start coming out. This is still a mono speaker, so you will have to wait for the next iPad to deliver stereo speakers. As you'll no doubt be aware having read our headline above, there actually isn't a 1GHz CPU at the helm, as AnandTech and IOSnoops report the dual-core ARM Cortex A9 is dynamically clocked around 900MHz, likely in search of reduced power consumption. Perhaps more interestingly for all you gamers in the audience, the iPad 2 reports that it has a dual-core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU on the die as originally foretold -- and, spoiler alert -- it mops the floor with both the original iPad and the Motorola Xoom. Though the new chip didn't quite demonstrate 9X the graphical prowess of its predecessor, it rendered 57.6 frames per second in a GLBenchmark test where the (admittedly higher-res) Tegra 2 tablet managed only 26.7fps, and last year's iPad pulled only 17.6fps. Well not for long! We suspected! and a trusted source just confirms that the Apple iPad 2 is coming to India next week! It is expected to launch via Vijay Sales, Croma and Reliance iStores. Yesterday we heard Apple COO, Tim Cook talking about the success of the device and 13 more countries getting the iPad 2 in a weeks time, luckily India figures on the list. Apple was criticized badly for delaying the launch of the iPad 1 in India (it launched in Jan 2011), but it seems that they are making up with the iPad 2. The pricing as we guessed yesterday would be the same as the iPad 1, starting at Rs 27900 for the 16GB WiFi version and going up to Rs 44,900 for the 64GB 3G+WiFi version. Stay tuned! MVP 3 Report post Posted May 9, 2011 Anybody planning to buy an ipad 2, stay away from it for a while. I have one with me and it leaks light on the edge of the screen. I thought it was because I may have applied too much pressure on the screen. But doing a google search, almost everyone who got an ipad 2 Is facing the same problem. But the latest hiccup is unlikely to have long-term consequences. Apple is recalling a number of Verizon-issued iPad 2s after they were sent out with identical cellular serial numbers. It's not clear how many units are affected but 9to5mac quotes an anonymous Apple store employee who said he sent more than 100 back to Apple's headquarters. Customers are peeved, chiming in on an Apple discussion forum. The issue appears to affect both 32GB and 64GB iPads and revolves around Mobile Equipment Identifiers (MEIDs) that identify the device on the Verizon CDMA cellular network. These are used for billing purposes, among other things. Because GSM-based iPads from AT&T rely on micro-SIM cards, which users insert into the devices, it's unlikely they'll also be affected by this issue. AllThingsD quotes an Apple representative who said "duplicate MEID numbers were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad 2 units for the Verizon 3G network." Apple has already sold 25 million iPads, it said at the WWDC earlier this week, and aims to sell eight million more this quarter. However, a tragic explosion at the Foxconn plant that manufactures iPads has added to supply concerns. The earthquake in Japan has also made it difficult for some manufacturers to receive components, although there are reports that Apple is seeking new component suppliers to step up production of tablet devices. It's not clear if the MEID is irrevocably hard-coded onto each unit, or whether it's merely stored as a variable within the firmware. rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted June 18, 2011 Workers Behind iPad 2 Leak Sentenced To Prison Source In a recent case at a Shenzhen court, Xiao Chengsong, General Manager of Shenzhen MacTop Electronics Co, was found guilty of offering 20,000 Yuan (Rs 1,35,000 approx) to a Hon Hai (Foxconn) employee named Hou Pengna for information about the iPad 2. Ms Hou in turn paid Lin Kecheng, a Foxconn employee working in R&D, to take photographs of the device's back cover, a full six months before the iPad 2 was announced. Apparently, MacTop wanted the device's dimensions so that it could start working on the case manufacturing process. The trio will now undergo up to 18 months of imprisonment and additional fines up to 150,000 Yuan (Rs 10,35,000 approx). Looking at the nature of the punishment, taking such a risk for 20,000 Yuan might sound like a terrible decision. However, according to a report, thousands of Foxconn workers live and work in the same compound and get a salary of around $290 (Rs 15,000 approx) per month. Considering their 80-hour work week , it is easy to understand the temptation of easy money. One cannot justify the wrongdoing of the Foxconn employees, but such strict action seems harsh. Previously, Foxconn was in the spotlight when a 25 year old worker committed suicide after being interrogated for leaking the iPhone. At that time, an Apple spokeswoman had made the following statement: "We require that our suppliers treat all workers with dignity and respect". Apple is known for strictly guarding its product development secrets, and expects the same from its suppliers. The fear of losing a multi-million dollar deal drives companies such as Foxconn and the Chinese government to take strict measures.
