anujit 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2005 The Acceptable Use Policy guidelines in RelianceBroadband says that they do block certain ports such as 137, 138, 139, 445, 5554, 9996, & 1434 for TCP & UDP. What is the implication of this? What are these ports used for? Do they block ports on RIM too? And along with this policy does RelianceBroadband come with an SLA as well? I'm extremely satisfied with RIM's internet service (not so much with their RWorld though). I have never got disconnected (as might happen with a landline), or faced connection problems (been using it for close to 6 months now) - I have just faced a problem once where I couldnt connect to their service for a few hours. In the rare event that I cannot connect a retry usually fixes things just fine. And my download speeds have never been less than 8-10 kbps (thats twice the land line speeds) & all at landline rates! How does the Reliance Broadband service compare to this? It is certianly cheaper than Tata Indicom who offers broadband (256 kbps - unlimited) @ Rs. 6000/month or BSNL (256 kbps unlimited) @ Rs. 3000/month! Is the service available in Calcutta yet? And are there any users in Calcutta? Let me know your feedback on their service!

But the ports being blocked are totally for security reasons. they block services like tftp protocol net bios scan etc. you will never need them . they are meant primarily for gaining information about a computer. the best thing about reliance network is their infrastructure. low cost proper deals and the fact that p2p applications won't be blocked and function better because there is no nat(network address translation layer) which is prominent in all local cable internet providers and even bsnl . because htey split a given ip into many addresses hence the bandwith isn't dedicated. i will get a reliance broadband connection as soon as it is available in my city.because not only am i satisfied customer of r connect services.but also they are the only one with proper customer care. dacodecz 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2005 Hello, For port number details visit this link. http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers They are not blocking any port on R-Connect, I am even getting service scan packets from there own network anyway my firewalls default policy is to drop, so the scanning host is always getting into black hole :-). I am posting the ip-range registered to reliance infocom by apnic, so if you find any ip from this range is DoSing your system, you can contact the anti abuse support of relianceinfo. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [Querying whois.apnic.net] [whois.apnic.net] % [whois.apnic.net node-1] % Whois data copyright terms http://www.apnic.net/db/dbcopyright.html inetnum: 220.224.0.0 - 220.227.255.255 netname: RelianceInfocom descr: Reliance Infocom Ltd. country: IN admin-c: JT125-AP tech-c: RS78-AP status: ALLOCATED PORTABLE notify: relianceip_admin@ril.com changed: hm-changed@apnic.net 20021216 mnt-by: APNIC-HM mnt-lower: MAINT-IN-SN changed: hm-changed@apnic.net 20040301 source: APNIC route: 220.226.32.0/22 descr: Reliance Infocom Ltd Internet Data Centre origin: AS18101 mnt-by: MAINT-IN-SN changed: relianceip_admin@ril.com 20040212 source: APNIC country: IN person: Jyotindra Thacker nic-hdl: JT125-AP remarks: Send spam & abuse Reports remarks: include detailed information & Times in UTC remarks: to Antiabuse.support@Relianceinfo.com e-mail: Antiabuse.support@Relianceinfo.com address: C Block, Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City, address: Thane Belapur Road, Navi Mumbai address: Maharashtra, address: India phone: +91-2-230382765 fax-no: +91-2-230382899 country: IN changed: relianceip_admin@ril.com 20041207 mnt-by: MAINT-IN-SN source: APNIC person: Rajendar Singh nic-hdl: RS78-AP remarks: Send spam & abuse Reports remarks: include detailed information & Times in UTC remarks: to Antiabuse.support@Relianceinfo.com e-mail: Antiabuse.support@Relianceinfo.com address: C Block, Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City, address: Thane Belapur Road, Navi Mumbai address: Maharashtra, address: India phone: +91-2-230382401 fax-no: +91-2-230382899 country: IN changed: relianceip_admin@ril.com 20041207 mnt-by: MAINT-IN-SN source: APNIC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> BTW in how many cities they are providing broadband services ? dacodecz 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2005 ....anyway my firewalls default policy is to drop, so the scanning host is always getting into black hole :-) not always a good idea to drop... 25733 Hello linuxguy, By default dropping policy I mean dropping all the unsolicited packets in which I am not interested. BTW there are some ports always open on which I am running some services and some for P2P brigade. For rest my policy is if I am not going to you I will not let you come in :-), but if I am going to you then you are always welcome until unless your IP get added to my ban-list. BTW what firewall are you behind ?

forcelaw2 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2005 well ports are not blocked on r connect.that whois data form dacodecz. shows that r connect users aren't behind a nat either. i am sure security will be beefed up by reliance when broadband is launched in earnest. also i feel broaband users are hte ones most at risk.and also most likely to do harm.hence security must be tighter then for a secondary purpose connection. I doesnt make any sense to me 25894 Dear linuxguy, I meant this. If peer X want to communicate with me, than it would be allowed only if (1) My host initiated the connection. (2) My host is have having a port open for a service, that I want to serve and peer X's ip is not in my ban-list. Rest you can decode easily, I hope so :-).
