YouTube Planning Premium Channels With Original Programming...

Will it be the TV, Cable and DTH of the Future?

Although there are a few dominant video streaming websites on the Internet, by far and away the largest is YouTube. The problem is, paying for all that video content being streamed 24 hours a day, coupled with the copyright issues said content brings, makes it tough to generate a lot of profit or any at all.

Google has been attempting to do so for years now, with advertising noticeably increased recently on the videos you watch, either around them or in them. But Google isn't just concentrating on advertising, it also wants original content you just can't watch anywhere else.

The Wall Street Journal has been told that content is now a focus for YouTube, and with it is coming a major revamp to the site. Apparently we can expect to see a number of premium content channels appearing and dominating the homepage. As many as 20, in fact.Within those channels will be original programming which Google has set aside $100 million to pay for and wants up to 10 hours of content going live every week.

In other words, YouTube looks like it may become the equivalent of a TV network, funding premium TV series and possibly even movies that Google can then use to drive traffic to the site.

The change of focus for the video site would fit well with the drive to get Google TV into our homes, and the growing number of TVs being sold that are Internet-enabled. It would also means Google could up the cost of advertising during these original streams.

At the moment Google is thought to be hiring to support the new channels as well as meeting with talent agencies to gauge interest. As for when it will launch, a phased approach is expected starting near the end of this year. Of course, Google isn't commenting on such rumors.

This was in the works for quite some time, I might be vilified for saying this, but Google will move away from the free content model for some of it's products, some products might well continue to be ad-supported i.e. free to end user. The YouTube development is one example. Frighteningly Google was in talks with Verizon for premium internet and we will see more of such products wherein people who pay Google get premium services and those who do not become second class netizens.

YouTube launches live broadcasting service

YouTube has launched a live broadcasting service, called YouTube Live, in a bid to broadcast increasing numbers of sports and music events as they are happening.

Google has launched a two-day livestreaming trial on its video-sharing website, YouTube

“Today we're announcing the initial roll out of YouTube Live, which will integrate live streaming capabilities and discovery tools directly into the YouTube platform for the first time," said YouTube Live product manager Joshua Siegel.

YouTube has been trialling live streaming over the last couple of years. Previously it has broadcast one-off events live, including U2’s concert at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, cricket from the Indian Premier League, and a State of the Union address from Barack Obama.

CitizenTube, a channel on the YouTube website dedicated to political discussion, has also regularly hosted live streams.

Only select partners will be able to use the live stream platform in its first iteration.

“Today, we'll also start gradually rolling out our live streaming beta platform, which will allow certain YouTube partners with accounts in good standing to stream live content on YouTube," explained Siegel. "The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead."

The first big event scheduled to be live streamed via YouTube Live this year is Coachella, a major US music festival.
