deepu 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2005 One way to run multiple OSs on a PC is to install them in a multi-boot scenario. But, this way you cannot run them simultaneously, and rebooting to switch between OSs is a hassle. Instead its better to use some emulating s/w. QEMU is one such s/w. you can get from http://www.freeoszoo.org/ The advantage is that you can run DOS in a window and never needs to reboot to switch between OS. You can also try microsoft's Virtual PC 2004 too... Infact I have some softwares which I use regularly...Unfortunately they will not run in WIndows XP.. I used to dual boot until I stumbled upon Microsoft's Virtual PC 2004. Now I am running WIndows 95 in a virtual PC environment.. Of course you will need a decently powered machine and some amount of memory to get good performance...

But if you want to install the dos on the separate partition of the same drive, then remember dos can only exist on the primary partition, and your partition size cant be more than 2GB. You can even try emulator as dosemu/bochs/vmware to get into dos w/o putting it into separate drive/partition. But I guess you want to have the dos because some legacy apps you wanna run or you wanna poke with some hardware w/o fiddling with any abstraction layer, in that case emulator based solution will not be sufficient. BTW can you be more specific about your requirements, that way you can have more personalized solution. Cheers........
linuxguy 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2005 You can use DOS BOX to run most DOS programs. Anyway, if you still want to multiboot using DOS then GRUB can do it for you. Unplug your other drives and install DOS on your new drive. Then edit grub to boot that drive like this: rootnoverify (hdX,0) makeactive chainloader +1 where hdX is the DOS drive. Vishal Gupta 4 Report post Posted February 15, 2005 I only want that Either Linux Boot loader (LILO or GRUB) or Windows XP Boot loader show an extra entry to boot into DOS, like we boot into Win 98 (Restart in DOS mode). SIMPLE!!! I want this cauz if i hv to replace any system file which i can't replace while windows is running or I hv to format my C: drive, on which Win XP is installed and other many reason, then i hv to boot into DOS using bootable CD or floppy. SO it'll be very nice if i can boot into DOS mode like win98 provide. Thats it! So pls tell me how can i install DOS on my D: drive?

I think for this requirement its better to have Windows PE based CD in your hand.... It is a knoppix like Windows XP live distro and will allow you to do all these... The best part is that you can do lots of system maintainance activities using this which you cannot do in DOS... I have seen some torrents around on the internet of Windows PE... jusmail 0 Report post Posted February 16, 2005 I haven't tried this yet but it looks great! Apparently Microsoft released DOS to the public domain and someone "fixed" it. For those of you that wish DOS wasn't dead, look at: http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71/. Here's what MS-DOS 7.1 reportedly does: What's new in MS-DOS 7.10 since MS-DOS 6.x?
