thackervijay 16 Report post Posted June 28, 2011 guys my parents are now in USA and would be coming back next month, my father was getting some superb deals on LCD/LED sets of 32" and 37" over there for 200$ and 248" respectively for these sizes, but my query is would those sets work on our frequency.I believe our work on PAL system and their on NTSC.So would it be fine to get one from there or would i need some converter to enjoy HD sets brought from there

kshah 452 Report post Posted June 28, 2011 Most new TV sets are capable of global broadcasting systems. However better you check exact specs. For HD you need HD cable / satellite receiver. Not all channels are HD
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted June 28, 2011 US runs on 110 Volt Current whereas India 240 Volt. If the TV you are buying does not support both, you will need a separate 240 volt To 110 volt Electrical Device to run that.

dkaile 1,051 Report post Posted June 28, 2011 (edited) as mentioned by rajan, pal/secam is not a major issue as cable tv is watched mostly via video inputs, but the voltage is a big PIA problem. Ask them to ensure that it is preferably a multi-system tv (i.e pal/secam etc.) and that it can run on multiple voltages (i.e both 110V 60hz and 220V 50hz). We need 220V 50hz here in India... so the 2nd point is more essential. Edited June 28, 2011 by dkaile
csmart 472 Report post Posted June 29, 2011 if it does not support 240V then you need to get converter. if the quality of converter is not good then it will affect your TV. the main reason is frequency which 50Hz in India. the laptop chargers are designed to work from 110 to 230 VOlts and in both 60 and 50 Hz. but TVs are not. xuketo 7 Report post Posted June 29, 2011 I'm assuming you'll be using it with HDMI set top box. Check this thread for more information on PAL and NTSC flavors of HDMI: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/25316-4-hdmi-ntsc-flavours You will need one of these, if the TV does not support PAL refresh frequencies: http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-Pal-HDMI-to-NTSC-HDMI-Converter-1080p.html If you can get the model numbers, maybe we can give a more definitive answer about compatibility. petar 15 Report post Posted July 3, 2011 With all converters.... the picture n sound will not match... the clarity also suffers. If it don't support 110-240 volts- then u may need voltage converter. Shipping may look cheap at first instance, but you will also need to pay hefty port charges , custom clearing charges. Its simple not worth the effort. best is just buy it locally. xuketo 7 Report post Posted July 4, 2011 I've used atlona convertors in the past. Their quality is very good. No issues with sync etc. Just do a little research on the web for Atlona converters, and you'll find lots of happy users. Other cheap converters.... yes, you'll regret spending money on them. Very good quality voltage converter is 500Rs. No issues at all. I've been using it with my LCD that I bought from US for years now. If the TV is shipped under your usual baggage allowance, there is nothing extra that you have to pay for shipping. A 37" TV will be well under size and weight dimensions that airlines accept for free. So, if your parents don't have other baggage, I'll encourage you to explore the options.
