MUMBAI: Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries is conducting an advanced due diligence exercise on telecom services provider Aircel, three people said on condition of anonymity. Reliance Industries has completed at least three rounds of due diligence on Aircel and may offer to buy a controlling stake in the company if talks between the two sides result in a deal.

Reliance Industries marked its foray into the telecom sector by acquiring Infotel Broadband for close to $1 billion last year giving it broadband wireless access licenses in 22 circles across India.

Aircell is already embroiled in 2G controversy.

Read this,

"Indian investigators are currently probing allegations that a former telecom minister forced the founder of Aircel to sell out to Malaysia's Maxis Communications in 2006."

If reliance was not looking to buy Aircel, it wouldn't do due diligence of aircel's books. Denying the same is meant to divert media's attention on the issue.

Developing a network from scratch to supplement their soon to be released 4G LTE services will be daft. So look forward to a possible partnership or buyout with other established operator.

Among full-fledged pan India operators, RIL will not go with Airtel, Vodafone, Idea. :) So bet is always on Aircel.

Videocon/Uninor/Tata Docomo/S Tel/Cheers are not present in all circles. RIL may go with RCom.

@inception, KarthikR and Coolblue; I agree.MDA with the 4G in his pocket will definitely be on the lookout for a service provider for the backbone. Aircel looks like the ideal platform, not too small, all India footprint incl. J&K. If as has been said by coolblue MDA has been at due diligence, then the odds of a potential buyout much be very high.

Too many players are in the GSM market.A shake out and some merging is neccessary. Aircel is strong down south with vast network coverage. But RIL and RCOM why can't they work together in telecom sector? I prefer a Reliance take over rather than a Huewai purchase.
