anshu_s09 18 Report post Posted July 22, 2011 Leading telecom service provider Bharti Airtel on Friday hiked call tariffs by 20% in six major circles including New Delhi, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The hike in tariff will be passed on to pre-paid customers as well. Tariffs have been hiked from 1 paise per second to 1.2 paisa per second. Sources say that other telecom players will follow suit. Bharti Airtel stock price rallied by 4% and was trading at Rs 411 at 2:50 PM on the BSE. Bharti Airtel added 2.12 million mobile subscribers in June, taking its total to 169.2 million, data from Cellular Operators Association of India said. India is the world's second-biggest mobile-phone market after China. Bharti, the fifth-largest mobile operator globally by subscribers, operates in 19 countries in South Asia and Africa. Earlier this month, Bharti Airtel announced it was streamlining its India and South Asia operations to create a leaner cost structure in order to boost its financial performance. The restructuring comes as Bharti battles fierce domestic competition that has slashed call rates and is grappling with high interest costs on debt accumulated to purchase mobile licences in India and to expand into Africa. Bharti paid $10.7 billion last June for the Africa business of Kuwaiti telecom operator Zain. Its interest costs have soared due to the African purchase as well as from paying $3.3 billion to buy third-generation ( 3G )) spectrum in India to offer mobile and wireless broadband services. KanagaDeepan 1,084 Report post Posted July 22, 2011 Surely quality of networks (AFRICAN Airtel) will increase as a result... My guess why Airtel has started increasing tariff suddenly is "THEY EARLIER HAS SIMPLE METHOD TO LOOT customers by auto VAS ACTIVATIONS... NOW TRAI is taking steps to stop this..." So AirHELL is following this method to maintain that looting money continuously... Simple, isn't it???

Himanshu Singh 19 Report post Posted July 23, 2011 Expected move from Airtel after MNP dint do much damage to it. Had MNP led to Airtel losing customers in hordes it would not have dared such a thing.
MOBILE FAN 42 Report post Posted July 23, 2011 Thankfully RCOM never changes their existing users' postpaid plans. The Airtel increase is only for Prepaid customers. I dont understand, why the customers will not use MNP for the cheaper tariff.
drabhayshah76 7 Report post Posted July 24, 2011 Airtel people are daylight robbers. They just need a reason to keep their tariffs high.
kshah 452 Report post Posted July 24, 2011 In days of MNP, ideally any operator should think twice before hiking tariff, but thy know people do not have courage to even port out their numbers. And figures shows it very well. We are so indifferent towards acting that only discussions are left. Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
raccoon 53 Report post Posted July 25, 2011 Very true. I still know many who are dissatisfied but are still too intert to fill out a form or 2 for number portability. And who asked them to pay so much for 3G? Why burden 2G subscribers for 3G expenses? Airtel is the biggest scoundrel of them all. And its subscribers help it to remain so and fill their kitty. Karthik R 246 Report post Posted September 25, 2011 (edited) Trai seeks additional info from telcos on tariff hike New Delhi: Not satisfied with their replies, telecom regulator Trai has sought additional information from leading service providers, including Bharti airtel and Vodafone, on their recent decision to hike mobile tariffs by up to 20 percent. "Trai has received replies from various operators and we have asked for some more inputs from some of the service providers for their reasons to hike tariffs," a Trai source said. Earlier, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had sent letters to all the companies that recently hiked tariffs, seeking their justification for the tariff hike. Companies like Bharti airtel, Idea Cellular, Vodafone and Reliance Communications recently raised tariffs for their services by about 20 percent in most operating circles. Most of the companies cited inflationary pressure in the country as being responsible for the tariff hike. Industry experts are of the view that the hike in mobile tariffs is anti-consumer and it will only result in an abnormal increase in companies' profits. Most of the operators have been given spectrum free of cost so that they can provide affordable services. Trai, a source said, would also look into this aspect before taking any decision. Airtel had raised the tariffs for its 'Advantage' and 'Freedom' pre-paid tariff packages, which are based on per minute billing, to 60 paise per minute for local and STD mobile-to-mobile calls. Earlier, it was 50 paise per minute in this category. "Telecom is probably the only industry where, despite increasing inflation, tariffs have been falling unabated. Continuously declining margins, high 3G and BWA auction prices, constrained spectrum and rural roll-out aspirations leave us with little choice but to make some price corrections," Bharti airtel had said in a statement.
