Arun 795 Report post Posted February 26, 2005 February 18, 2005 mid-day.com Reliance may not want to go to town with it but after the l’affaire Dhariwal of Manikchand fame, Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance industries seems to be going slow on using his flashy style statement — the Rs 5.6 crore Maybach. According to sources close to Mukesh, they have not seen the Maybach at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City at Vashi, Navi Mumbai. “It’s his Mercedes that we see here normally. But I don’t know whether Mukesh Ambani’s family is using the Maybach or not,” said a senior official of Reliance Infocomm. Though in terms of asset size the Ambani empire would dwarf the Manikchand group, Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal, an accused in the Interpol’s wanted list, is the only other owner in India of the super luxury car Maybach manufactured by Daimler Chrysler. Mukesh Ambani’s secretary, on being contacted, said, “How can you compare Mukesh with Dhariwal? Why are you interested in knowing if Mukesh would retain the car or sell it off? It’s his personal matter.” Dhariwal, it may be recalled, has been charged with having links with Dawood Ibrahim by the Indian police authorities and is absconding. Mukesh has been painted out by his younger brother Anil Ambani as trying to cheat him out of his rightful share of the family’s wealth. When contacted, a Reliance spokesperson said, “This is a private matter of Shri Mukesh Ambani” Interestingly, Daimler Chrysler sees no reason to change its attitude to Dhariwal. “We do not comment on the personal situation of our customers. There is no need for the company to change its policies. Services will continue to all customers without discrimination,” said Hans Michael Huber, managing director and CEO, Daimler Chrysler India. Maybach’s service centre say Mukesh still uses the car The Sanghi motors service centre of Maybach in Mumbai that has been providing after sale service to Ambani, however, said that Mukesh continues to use his opulent luxury car. “Mukesh Ambani is still using the Maybach and only a couple of days ago we received feedback that he was happy with the performance of the car. He had categorically stated that he has been using it on all important occasions.
