Please suggest between Samsung Epic or Epic 2

Recommended Posts

Earlier in June the folks at This is my next have been tipped off on all of the details on Sprint's third quarter (July-September) roadmap and although there aren't any specific launch dates included, there are juicy details about some upcoming handsets to be found. Here's what we can reportedly expect -

Samsung Epic 2 will feature a 4-inch display, single-core 1.2GHz Hummingbird processor (likely the same as Verizon’s Droid Charge and AT&T’s Infuse 4G), 8-megapixel camera and a physical QWERTY keyboard.

The earlier Epic 4G ran at 1 GHz, while the new one will run at 1.2 Ghz. The Samsung Epic 2′s screen will remain 4-inch with Super AMOLED Plus but its rear camera acquired 3 more megapixels (i.e., the Epic 2 will have an 8-megapixel camera).

Is this a deserving successor, worth waiting for? Also forum members who have sticked to Epic for a long time, are you planning to upgrade to Epic 2?

I don't see that much improvement other than in cam. Heck it isn't even getting dual-core like the Galaxy S II - Epic 4G touch! HTC’s EVO 3D succeeds last year’s EVO 4G in many ways — the dual-core processor and qHD 3D-capable display are both pretty big boosts. Well, the Epic 2 doesn’t sound like it’s going to be quite the same level of improvement over the original Epic 4G :(

EPIC is as on today still contemporary, it may have 1 GHz single core CPU, but most apps as on today are single core optimized. Many member may differ with my saying but as on today I have liked epic the best amongst all handsets used. May be because my preference for physical qwerty. (45% data on smartphone passes through QWERTY handset, despite being in minority)

I am waiting for some real specs for up gradation. EVO 3D was one of it but it lacked qwerty and I am not at all fond of movies so found it useless.

BTW come 25th Sept my EPIC will be 1 year old. Longest lasting handset.

@Karthik R

You are considering a handset for yourself or it's a general discussion between Epic & Epic 2?

^ ^ ^ It will serve both purpose. I am dumping my BB 9650 and getting an Epic (have talked to Tushar) but don't mind waiting a month if the next iteration delivers more to the plate.

you know the difference. but then Epic is with Froyo while epic 2 is on Ginger bread. other difference is of physical keyboard. there are other improvements also. like more internal RAM, video recording, bluetooth v3, touchwiz v4 etc.

check comparison here..

@ Chirag

You mistook the Epic 2 for Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. Both are different devices.

Epic 2 looks like a vaporware product now. More so after Galaxy S II launch with the name Epic 4G Touch. Haven't come across any confirmation/authentic source/launch date recently after the initial June/July leaks. Even considering that it may become reality, it does not make much sense to wait for an unconfirmed device for 2-3 months. WIth 3 month product launch cycles, you will have further options available then. That makes buying decision an endless loop, more confusion and eventually no purchase.

If there is a strong urge felt today for a smartphone, best course of action is to decide your need and budget as on today, see the available options and jump right in to Android. There are viable options even right now.

Exactly epic 2 mentioned here seems vaporware have not seen it mentioned anywhere else as epic 4g touch only is mentioned.

Right now the best in gsm is sgs2/sensation and in few weeks the sgs2 lte/sensation xe are coming. The 3vo gsm is great too but overpriced

In cdma the 3vo, droid bionic and rumored? upcoming sgs2 lte.

I am still on epic and find it good phone. I can overclock it to 1.2 ghz as well. Development has slowed down and it will not get custom rom beyond gb though.
