Amazon’s new tablet – the Kindle Fire - goes on sale for pre-order Thursday night. The search is on to dethrone the iPad but is the Kindle Fire an iPad killer? The Kindle Fire’s price alone is propelling it to headlines on the technology blogs and websites. At $199, the Kindle Fire is far less than the iPad and introduces the world of tablet computer to many people who may otherwise not afford it. The Amazon and Apple tablets share several features including: they both have the all popular touch-screen; they both consume content including books, movies and television. Their difference set the tablets apart and could be the deciding factor for future tablet users. The Kindle Fire’s 7-inch screen is smaller than the iPad’s 9.7 inch display area; it doesn’t have a camera or a microphone. Chicago technology gurus at the Illinois Technology Association can now add another tablet to their roster when creating and developing apps, which Tech Nexus’s Terry Howerton said is a booming business and the real motivation behind Amazon’s latest gadget. “It's not about the specs of the device, it's not about how this is a personal computer, it's really more about how this is a gateway to Amazon's Movies on Demand, to Amazon's streaming television, books, it's really all about the content and that's frankly where Amazon will make their profit, “ Howerton said. Amazon’s tablet doesn’t go on sale until November 15 but future Kindle Fire owners can pre-order on Amazon’s website Thursday night.

city02 63 Report post Posted October 3, 2011 it'll be interesting to see how well kindle does without camera and 3g built in vs the ipad i don't think it will catch up in volumes until they introduce a higher end version with a larger screen maybe priced at $299 instead which is still much cheaper than the cheapest ipad [about $100-200 less approx]
