yogeshpote 20 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 Hello RIM gurus, This is my first post so pardon me if i have broken any rules in posting, i wanna ask some thing very simple, i want to decide betw nexus s 4g vs htc evo 4g. Honestly i am not much into cdma but lately i have been started using cdma on basic samsung smooth and i kinda liked the network (reliance mumbai) okay coming to the point i am gonna use the evdo plan on the handset which ever i get, but need to know which will be the best among them to use the evdo and the hotspot options! Currently i have 2 gsm postpaid numbers (vodafone) and using on iphone 4 and other with samsung nexus s (gsm) but still like to go in for cdma smart phone. Reason asking for advise among these two is bcoz i need good data on them, i believe nexus s 4g and htc evo does good job. Also would like to mention if i go for htc evo then can i install the custom rom on it? WILL i be able to use the phone on reliance network for voice and data? I am planning to use gingerbread deck rom 2.3.4 for htc evo coz i like the vanilla google pure experience. Also would like to know what will be max speed i wud get on either of the phones on evdo plan? Also if someone will be kind enough to help me with evdo plans will be highly appreciated Thank you all! Yogesh :-)
rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 There won't be much difference in EVDO data performance between Nexus S and Evo 4G. EVDO speed is dependent on network signal strength, congestion in nearest tower, time of the day / night (peak - non peak hours) in the area in which you are going to use it. Max speed if all the factors mentioned are excellent will be around 2Mbps. However in real life, you don't get that much and can expect between 500Kbps to 1Mbps during most of the day time and higher speeds during late nights. yogeshpote 20 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 Thank you for the prompt reply, so all in all what I understand is that there won't be much difference in either of them as far as evdo data is concerned? However its bit disappointed that evdo gives Max 2mbps and at actuals gives 500kbps to 1 mbps! I was under impression that it gives 3.1 mbps and some people on forum have shared it in there signature upto 4 - 5 mbps on evdo, and how is that possible? As wud like to know if custom rom of pure Google wud work on HTC evo? Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Arun 795 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 um... whose signature did you see 4 - 5 mbps on EVDO? The best I got is around 2.7 mbps under a tower at night. The speed will vary a lot depending on the distance and interferences between tower and handset, and number of simultaneous users. The speed will vary for HSPA (3G GSM) also based on these factors as the speeds mentioned are theoretical maximum speeds.
yogeshpote 20 Report post Posted October 2, 2011 So basically cdma evdo is not as fast as gsm 3g? As I am using vodafone Mumbai and I get 6.2 mbps DL and 4 mbps UL most of the time of the day! Have never got more then that and offcourse this speed I get on iphone 4 and Google nexus s gsm. Hey nope of you answered if I can use vanilla Google on HTC. Will you guys suggest droid incredible 2 instead htc evo???? Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
Karthik R 246 Report post Posted October 3, 2011 Revised versions of EVDO like EVDO Rev.B was not widely adopted by CDMA operators so it is not wrong to say GSM 3G standards like HSDPA / HSPA have theoretical max speed. This topic will shed some light on your doubts - Basics about CDMA / EVDO
