Resistive touch display will give the user the pleasure of touching everything thrice before the touch gets registered!

Not commenting on other specs as it won't be fair considering the dirt cheap price tag.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that the device have passable quality.

This is indeed an achievement, if not a subsidized product. No prooduct is perfect so why talk about resistive screen? 2K is just amazing.

Source

aakash-1024x395.jpg

Indian government is back again with its mythical $35 Android tablet and you will going to see a whole new tablet today, not the one which was shown last year.

It seems the allegations of last tablet being Chinese and several other factors including problems with manufacturing have led Indian Government to go for a totally new tablet, thus so much delay. The new version $35 tablet is being manufactured by a Canadian company Datawind in a Noida plant.

This tablet will be called Aakash Low Cost Access Device (LCAD) and will be available to students for just INR1200 after subsidies. According to the rumored specifications, it features Android 2.2, 256 MB RAM, a 2GB SD memory card, and 32 GB expandable memory slot and two USB ports.

The press conference is scheduled for later today.

New Delhi: The much awaited India's ultra-low-cost tablet is finally here. The much talked-about $35 tablet has been branded Aakash, and not Sakshat as reported earlier. The initial cost at which the government is acquiring one lakh units the tablet PC from DataWind is Rs 2250 per unit. The target price at which the government intends to acquire an additional 1 crore units is the previously publicised Rs 1750 per unit.Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) and a 366 Mhz processor the 7-inch tablet has a resistive touch screen. The Aakash tablet is in fact DataWind's UBISlate 7 tablet. A cellular modem will be the additional feature in the commercial model. Some units of the tablet PC were also distributed to the students present at the launch event in New Delhi. The tablet also comes with a 12-month replacement warranty. The device was first showcased in back in July 2010. The tablet supports additional external memory up to 32 GB and includes an USB port.A keyboard portfolio case for the tablet will also be made available during the commercial launch at an additional cost of Rs 300.India trails fellow BRIC nations Brazil, Russia and China in the drive to get its 1.2 billion population connected to technologies such as the Internet and mobile phones, a report by risk analysis firm Maplecroft said this year. The number of Internet users grew 15-fold between 2000 and 2010, according to another recent report. Still, just 8 per cent of Indians have access. That compares with nearly 40 per cent in China. Some 19 million people subscribe to mobile phones every month, making India the world's fastest growing market, but most are from the wealthier segment of the population in towns. The launch last week of Amazon's Kindle Fire shook up the global tablet market, with its $199 price tag and slick browser a serious threat to Apple's iPad.Like the Kindle Fire, the Aakash uses the Google Android operating system, but market watchers were sceptical the Indian-made device will have mass appeal.

It will be Rs.3000 for us.

What is bugging me is that it is cloud based, so do we have the bandwidth for the students, and what will be the cost for it.

I dont think this is an achievement in anyway.

366 MHz processor, resistive touch, 256 MB RAM and poor battery life : Any company can create such hardware at this price. They dont do because it wont sell. Just wait for the reviews and be assured that the product will be a failure.

Yes, only Kapil Sibal can boast about this symbolic "achievement".

Upgraded Version of Aakash Tab Expected in February 2012, Same Price

Source

Last month, the world's most affordable tablet was unveiled in India amidst a lot of fanfare, as it brought along a promise of improving the quality of education for those who lacked proper education resources in the country. Called Aakash meaning the Sky, the tablet, at least promised to reach those highs. For an attractive price tag of $45, roughly Rs. 2,999, DataWind, the makers of this tablet stated that the tablet would run Android 2.2 and sport a 7-inch display. Now, according to a report in the Hindustan Times, the makers of Aakash-1 are already trying to bring out an upgraded version in February 2012. The catch here is, it will be priced the same as the first version.

Delighted students at the launch of the Aakash tablet in New Delhi, last month

According to the report, the planners of the Aakash-1 got down to collecting feedback from the users of the Aakash tablet, and based on the suggestions provided by them it was decided that unlike the first Aakash tablet, which had a 366 MHz processor, Aakash-2 will boast of a 800 MHz processor. This simply means that the tablet will have faster download speeds, especially for YouTube videos. For those multi-taskers, the Aakash-2 will come with 1GB RAM, as opposed to the 256 megabytes of RAM on the Aakash tablet. Additionally, Aakash-2 is being touted to sport an in-built camera on the front, useful for video chatting using Skype. The 7-inch touch screen display too is set to improve in the upgraded version, suggests the report.

Aakash-2 will also see a larger group of technological companies coming together to lend their expertise. However, the biggest challenge would obviously remain fulfilling the orders for a large, and budding student community, as well as for the regular tech enthusiast.

Does it mean it will be able to make voice calls?

Any idea?
