Television OS - Has It Evolved?

Recommended Posts

So finally I moved to new age LED TV from my 30 year old 'Colour' Television Set from Bush...

While most people have told me dont have high expectations with life of new TV, I did expect a lot with respect to features and customisation.

To my utter disappointment, the software/OS on TV have not evolved a lot...

Something as basic as setting custom volume for each channel is not available in the so called Samsung SMART TV

PIP seems to be limited when you streaming content across multiple sources. But if you are watching analog cable, cant use it for multiple channels

Controlling resolution in case if you want to lower it to match the analog signals is not available

Readiness to play multiple video formats is also very poor. The biggest disappointment is that it cant even play dat files, when played through a pendrive

Hardware

There is no Video out feature in case if you want to record programs

The remote control design is so poor and hasnt been upgraded to suit the new features. Something as simple as using Favourites menu requires you to press 4-5 buttons. Whats the use of adding to favourites if it still requires so much effort to be done

I have no complaints as such with the Company and the brand, just disappointed that Television OS hasnt evolved at the speed of OS in computers and mobile phones.

May be Google/Apple should focus on developing OS for device...

@Vishal

TV is just like a Smart Monitor we have in PC

If you want too much juice please get Network Media Player OR HTPC OR like Google TV OR Media Player Boxed

A few years back we thought Mobile Phones are just 'Mobile Wireless Landlines' and see where has it reached today

My point is not how much less is offered...

but how much of potential is yet to uncovered... Imagine the control that companies such as Samsung, LG, Sony would leverage if they start making smarter TVs which can monitor usage, analyse content which is watched and provide free content accordingly. No one would mind banner ads if all premium HD channels would be offered free.

Media monitoring is big business. I work is worlds largest audience monitoring company. The kind of money that we make out of the limited audience that we track is immence. Electronic companies can start having a share in this money.

Its like how the Walmarts and Tescos of the world sell scanner data to research companies. A lot of times the money from such data forms a large pie in the in their P&L statement...

Sky is the limit..

Are there any good Universal remotes which I can look out for?

I am yet to put the wifi dongle... but I believe once I do that, I can control some functions from my android phone. Lets see what features I get from there.

Exactly the point... even Picture in Picture is an age old feature..

Using your android phone to control tv is just so impractical.

I believe its nothing more than show off mterial.

Everytime when you want to change a channel.. or mute or change volume.... you need to open an app... takes few seconds and then scroll to the button and then click it. Not practical atall.

It can rather be used to have little fun by changing channels stting in another room and people guessing how did it happen. They will curse and say the remote is defected or the tv is defected.. but can never guess that you ca do it all even by sitting in another room :)

(I connected my samsung led with the router in my home using cat5 cable(cost rs. 50). No need to buy expensive wireless dongle)
