csmart 472 Report post Posted June 7, 2012 It is rumored that Microsoft may by Nokia. Currently, Nokia shares are below their book value and it is struggling to stay afloat. But I think, MS made mistake by not considering Palm. If they are interested, then the RIM (Blackberry) will be better choice. Is Microsoft about to acquire Nokia? Source: TOI HELSINKI: Finnish telecom giant Nokia, considered among the most trusted brands in India, is going through a bad patch with its shares at an all-time low, triggering speculation that it may be acquired by Microsoft. Once the most valuable companies in Europe, the mobile telecom equipment firm has seen its share prices fall to 2.20 euros in recent days -- the lowest since the mid-1990s. The weekly Helsinki Times in its latest edition said the Nokia stocks were now below book value -- a situation described as "worth more dead than alive" rhetorically. "The investment community is fertile ground for rumours, and there are plenty about what could happen to Nokia. One of the most persistent rumours is that Microsoft may buy the company," the weekly said. "The alliance with Microsoft is a powerful one. Maybe Apple and Google have already won the mobile-phone business, and everyone else is doomed," it said in a report, quoting The Wall streetJournal. "But that's what they once said about Nokia. Things change in this industry. Microsoft, which is desperate to play catch-up in smartphones, could buy Nokia today out of petty cash." The Bill Gates-led US software and tech giant has about 46 billion euros in cash equivalent, while Nokia's market value is 8.4 billion euros, the weekly said, adding there was no speculation on any other buyer for Nokia, ruling out Apple, Samsung or RIM. Everything is going according to plan in the conspiracy theory - Nokia, with Stephen Elop (a former Microsoft executive) as head, purposively sabotaged it's R&D of Meego/Symbian OS platform and marketing to reduce it's market value and pave way for Microsoft's eventual aquisition. This was obviously the ulterior motive. Microsoft's answer to Google's aquisition of Motorola Mobility, to gain myriads of patents which Nokia holds. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

ashokb 11 Report post Posted June 8, 2012 That stage also has gone now. Trojan horse has effectively got rid of team behind meego and Symbian. So now only option remaining is declare bankruptcy and get taken over by ms. Current cash reserve is just adequate for another 12-18 months. So sad days ahead for company who rule mobile markets. ashokb 11 Report post Posted June 17, 2012 (edited) Yeah absolutely right. With market capital of 8billion dollars, it's sitting duck for acquisition. That's far less than Motorola sold out for. For targeting American markets, the nokia share holders brought American CEO. That CEO could neither get them American market share nor it let them survive on rest of the world. ashokb 11 Report post Posted June 18, 2012 It can also come around with Apollo. I am still not writing it off as Apollo does hold promise from what I have seen so far. Trojan horse was brought on insistence of non finish stake holders. Basically I learnt one lesson, Never let outsider come in your company and never never get them controlling stake. Minority stake is strictly option. If you guys rememeber how Motorola was split in two divisions and how it was made ready for sell off. It's classic case. Carl Icahn the guy who did it. First got minority stake. Slowly went on increasing stake. Got two directors on board later on made majority stake. And finally forced Motorola break company in two. csmart 472 Report post Posted June 19, 2012 The main idea of splitting any co is to get fast cash. When a co is struggling this is the only way they can get huge cash without any efforts. Coming back to topic, Nokia made blunder by opting for Windows. Every body who is race for smart phone OS, made mistake by let going Palm. It was appreciated by critics and users.
