tanveer 59 Report post Posted March 23, 2005 The battle to provide free email with greater storage just keeps on getting bigger. In another attempt to keep its users satisfied, Yahoo has beefed up its free email service with a storage space of 1 GB.According to reports the company will begin upgrading free user accounts from 250 MB to 1 GB, starting late April. The company is expects the upgrade process to take about two week. Yahoo's latest move will place it on par with Google - the company responsible to start the email storage war. Google introduced 'Gmail', which offered 1 GB storage space to users when it started almost a year back, while Yahoo was still offering only 4 MB storage space. However, the offer was available through invitations only. Both Yahoo and Microsoft increased their free email storage space to keep up to the competition, but still could not match up to their rival's massive 1 GB. Rediff managed to catch up with Gmail by offering 1 GB in June last year. Yahoo's announcement comes just days after Google started offering new accounts to random users through its Web site, which has lead to the belief, that Gmail maybe coming out of its beta phase. However, it has been reported that Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo's vice president, said that the company's recent offering was a result of usage patterns among its users and not a response to Google latest move. Yahoo is also competing with Microsoft and Google in the desktop software arena.
