csmart 472 Report post Posted June 14, 2012 There was article in Economic Times, Mumbai edition, yesterday for the same. It said that you can save Rs 1,10,000/- over two years when you buy this with LCD/LED instead of smart TV. How to keep your TV 'smart' for years without spending a huge amount of money Source NEW DELHI: With built-in support for Twitter, Facebook, Skype and a bunch of other apps, smart TVs are all the rage today. But given how fast technology is changing, today's smart TV won't be that smart a year down the line. So, how do you fight TV technology's relentless progress that makes today's great product obsolete in a few months? Here's how. Move the 'smarts' of a smart TV to a small box outside the TV. When the smart TV technology changes significantly, you only need to upgrade the box, not spend a sizeable chunk of money on a whole new TV set. The first such option comes with Amkette's just-launched Android-powered media centre box. The small device, called the EvoTv, is priced at about 9,995. In comparison, a new 40-inch smart TV from top brands such as Samsung, Sony or LG will cost you at least Rs 60,000. Such a set will offer built-in smart apps, but the number of apps is limited. And the rate of obsolescence is high: a new smart TV every year if you want to keep up. Plus, software upgrades for your smart box are free. So, on average, over a period of two years, you can save more than 1 lakh (the cost of two smart TVs) by getting a smart box. Amkette's EvoTV connects to any existing TV that you have - even an old CRT set - and enables smart TV functionality such as Internet, social networking, apps, gaming and digital multimedia playback. The software is Android 2.3, modified to display nicely on all kinds of TVs. It offers you the full complement of apps from the Google Play Store, which at last count was well over 5,00,000. That's much more than the handful of apps that smart TVs offer. And since the box is powered by Android, you can use it with devices that you already own. For instance, you could connect any USB keyboard or mouse to the device. Adding a USB webcam will enable Skype video conferencing on your four-year-old (and in tech terms, ancient) TV. But it's the remote control of the EvoTV that's the real good deal. What you get is a sophisticated, radio frequency remote with touch sensors, accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone and speaker - similar to the motion sensing remote of Nintendo Wii.
