joshm 818 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 hello all , i have got a mtnl broadband connection, i would like to make it wifi now. i know mtnl provides wifi modems too , and i will call them for sure , but wanted specialist opinion of the people who know stuff out here on the issue. what are my options and how to go about it all. i am a total noob as far as the routers and modems are concerned. regards
csmart 472 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 ^^^ MTNL wi-fi routers are very basic and the wi-fi range is very very limited. It is advisable to go for your own router like Dlink, TP-Link etc. it should not cost more than 1800/- for basic router. If you want long range then it will cost more.

Arun 795 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Any wireless router will be compatible with ADSL providers like MTNL. e.g.: http://www.ebay.in/itm/NETGEAR-Wireless-N150-WGR-614-WiFi-Router-N-150-Wrnty-/180958253300?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_203&hash=item2a21f3d0f4#ht_2807wt_689 Just connect the cable from the ADSL modem to the wireless router. Configuration should be easy and you can get the details from the person who installs the modem for you. So be ready with the wireless router before they come. Yes, it will have LAN ports too so that you can connect using CAT5 cable if your PC does not have WiFi. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

sliver1 102 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Setting up the router is pretty very much easy. All you need to do is install the cd provided along with the router and follow the instructions. That should do it all. You will also get a leaflet with diagrams on how to connect the router.
aalok 442 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 and do not forget to password protect ur router. as u will not want unauthorised persons to use your data connection. Best is to enable access to known devices or the devices owned by binding MAC, for additional security and complete peace of mind..

rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Router suggested by Arun is good one. You can get the same for a net price of Rs 1160 from HERE after getting coupon of Rs 250 by using method mentioned HERE Alternatively if you want to keep a future provision for attaching USB Data Card too, TP Link TL-MR3220 can be considered for a few hundred rupees more >> http://www.ebay.in/i...#ht_5573wt_1139 It may be cheaper by Rs 100-200 in the market.

varunpatel 31 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Hi All, I am also looking for a good range router for my home use.My house is two storeyed and I use two routers to cover the house, one on each floor. Still I m not able to cover each and every corner of the floor and hence I require one router with a better range then an existing one.Currently,I m using the Beetel ADSL router.I have tried the TPLINK router which rajanbhai has mentioned in his post but that also provides same range as my existing Beetel one. Request u all to suggest some other router with better range to suffice my requirement.I am using Airtel broadband connection. Thanks.
Arun 795 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Is it a Wireless-N router? Wireless N (802.11n) routers contain two or three wifi radios specifically designed to extend the Wi-Fi range. e.g. Netgear WNR2000: http://www.netgear.com/home/products/wirelessrouters/work-and-play/WNR2000.aspx#two If it still doesn't cover your full house then you can use it as a wireless repeater to extend coverage. There are also wifi range extenders available from most brands like netgear, linksys, etc. when can connect to your existing router and act as a repeater. varunpatel 31 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Mine is a Beetel 450TC1 router. I dont know whether it is Wireless-G or Wireless-N. However, can say that practically,it provides the same range and signal strength as TPLINK MR-3420. Will try to check the coverage with the Netgear model you have suggested. Can you provide other router options which also provide the same range so that I can have options to select. Thanks. rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 ^ ^ ^ Covering each and every corner of two floors may be a hit and miss affair with even good quality consumer grade routers, leave aside those poor Beetel ones. Laws of physics in terms of concrete/other blockages will affect signal travelling everywhere with same strength. Some routers are hackable with DD-WRT firmware that allows for increasing radio power from the source. However try either/any of the following, Place the router at a location from where signal can travel to most places without blockages. Try replacing your router antenna with high power uni directional like these >> http://www.ebay.in/s...86.c0.m14.l1514 Try these type of routers with multiple antennas totalling to higher db output >> http://www.tp-link.i...TL-WR941ND#spec
varunpatel 31 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 Thanks Rajanbhai, Will try both the options and check for the coverage.
joshm 818 Report post Posted August 28, 2012 ok got everything working . had gone to the Market to purchase the netgear one , but the shop from where i generally purchase my electronic stuff didnt have it in stock , they suggested Belkin N150, F7D looked great and about the same price , the deal breaker thing was that the service centre of belkin is located in the same complex and it has 3 year w3arranty on the router as well as its adapter as well got it home in 1390/= and called up the c care executive , she guided me very well and now my home is wifi enabled http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/product/detail/p/5130 thanks to everyone , now can enjoy internet on my Nexus 7 as well as all my smartphones . my home Mtnl line is unlimited , with no fair usage policy : 2mbps so everything is very fast on my handhelds thanks again . amitroutray 384 Report post Posted August 29, 2012 Boost Your WiFi Signal Using Only a Beer Can This simple wifi boost has actually been shown to increase signal strength by at least 2 to 4 bars. And, well, I will drink to that. These instructions came to us via WikiHow and we think they are most definitely worth checking out. But here is the most important question: what kind of beer will you are use? For this project you are going to need scissors, a utility knife, some adhesive putty and an empty beer can. More than one empty beer can is acceptable but don’t kid yourself, the router only needs the one. The first step is to wash out your empty beer can, unless of course said beer is a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon. If it is PBR, promptly go drink a better beer. You really should be ashamed of yourself. Once the can has dried, you will want to remove it’s pull tab. Only perform this next step if you have not been drinking. Using the utility knife, saw off the bottom of the can. Chances are your can will not have a red dotted line. If you see one, put down the knife… you’ve had too much beer. You’ll notice in the above step that the can’s pull tab has returned. Clearly, there are only two possible reasons for this. One, you are really drunk and you never removed the tab in the first place. Or–the more likely answer–beer cans can regenerate themselves. It’s the home stretch! You just need to attach your modded beer can to the wifi router. Hopefully no other parts of the can have actually grown back. You now have beer-fi! So, what kind of beer did you use? SOURCE : Jerry James Stone Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
