Apple to sell iPhone in India through a broader retail channel this year

Recommended Posts

Wall Street Journal has reported that Apple is changing the way it sells their iPhone smartphone in the Indian market.

Instead of relying upon partnerships with mobile operator and a few major resellers, they have partnered with companies with wider presence throughout the country.

Redington and Ingram Micro are two of these new partners which would be selling the iPhone through their extensive network in the market.

Apple iPhone 5 is expected to go on sale in India later this month. Pricing is going to remain pretty high in the range of Rs. 45-55000.

The company has already dropped the prices of their existing products in India. Apple iPhone 3GS has been discontinued. Apple iPhone 4 8GB is now the cheapest model at Rs. 26,500. Apple iPhone 4S pricing starts at Rs. 38,500.

I am not sure however if this new strategy is going to work well for them. Discontinuing the iPhone 3GS model would hurt them a lot because it was selling in good numbers at prices below Rs. 20,000. It seems unlikely right now that iPhone 4 would get another price cut bringing it to similar levels.

Atleast they will be selling it factory unlocked, even if the price was very very high, not like AirHELL or Vada Phone (earlier)...
