KanagaDeepan 1,084 Report post Posted August 10, 2013 ^^^^^ In my case, I use OTG cable to just move big files like nandroid backup, recorded videos to free some space in the FIXED 16GB of GNexus... So its all a matter of couple of minutes and this penDrive will be more than enough. But many people used to watch movies or videos stored in thumb drive, where the drive should be connected for a long time. In those cases, OTG cable will be the best option... One of the overt messages delivered repeatedly is that Apple's iPhone is no longer hip. It is for old dorks. Samsung is for the hipsters, says the advertising. Well, if you think so, you are mistaken, as a new research has revealed that the phone we use can be a window into the lives we lead. The study, which asked iPhone and BlackBerryusers to rate their attractiveness on a scale of one to ten, found that while owners of Apple devices gave themselves a six, BlackBerry users thought they were only worthy of a five, Metro.co.uk reported. It was found that people who possess a BlackBerry earn nearly 2,500 pounds more per year and work less for it. The study commissioned by TalkTalk also showed that iPhone users are vain and spend the most on clothes and grooming. They love to travel and label themselves as daring, flirty, bright and confident. Meanwhile, BlackBerry users are more likely to be in a long-term relationship and have the most friends. They are busier, send more messages and emails and make more calls than their Apple opposites. The research surveyed 2,000 owners of the three major smartphone brands to determine whether the choice of handset was an extension of their personality. People using Android phone were found to be hard working but drink the most alcohol. They are also a devoted TV addict, shy, quiet and calm
csmart 472 Report post Posted August 28, 2013 (edited) BlackBerry looks to spin off Messenger division -- report Source BlackBerry might decide to spin off one of its divisions, according to a new report. BlackBerry is trying to determine whether it should spin off its BlackBerry Messenger service to a separate company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the plans. The newly formed company would be known as BBM Inc., according to the Journal's sources. Since its inception, BlackBerry Messenger has been one of the favorite platforms for BlackBerry users. The app allows users to instant-message with other BlackBerry users without paying text-messaging fees. Although BlackBerry devices have lost their popularity, BBM has remained a popular messaging option. The move would put the spinoff company in direct competition with other services like Whatsapp and WeTalk. If BBM Inc. is formed, it won't be long before the messaging service is expanded to other platforms, according to the Journal. In fact, a working version of BBM that can work across several platforms was built over a year ago, according to the Journal's sources. A desktop version also is running internally at BlackBerry. The possible BBM spinoff comes afterBlackBerry announced that it has appointed a special committee to explore "strategic alternatives" for its ailing option. BlackBerry claims to be open to any and all options, including selling its operation to another firm. So far, however, no plans have been announced. CNET has contacted BlackBerry for comment on the Journal's report. We will update this story when we have more information. st_7 138 Report post Posted August 30, 2013 India Will Not Use A Uniform Technology For Rolling Out 4G Services: It was till now thought that One LTE phone, that is specifically made for Indian market, will work any LTE network provider in India, as till now that it is percieved that all the cariers will use TDD-LTE, the technology that fast expanding as the most favourable network across Asia and even in US Sprint is building TDD-LTE network on its(Clearwire's) 2300 Mhz spectrum, for 4G services roll out. But here is the news coming out which suggests that it won't be the case. Instead either you will need to buy a phone that supports both technologies(TDD & FDD LTE) or need to check out with your network carier in your circle(state) which technology they are using before deciding to buy a smartphone to be used on their network. Ofcourse, this is all to be done when we get the LTE networks lit up across country starting in 2014. Videocon, one of the 4G spectrum holder, is being reported to be planning to rollout its 4G services starting in a year or so from now on FDD-LTE technology. Apparantly, Videocon has 5Mhz of spectrum in 1800 Mhz range across all the following circles Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East and West & Nokia Siemens to be the most likely vendor for Videocon's 4G roll out(they've already providing 2G infrastructure for Videocon). Another new titbit is that, all the 285 Mhz frequency in 1800Mhz range that freed up after the cancellations of 2G licenses of various operators in various circles is soon to be put up for sale once again(earlier government failed to attract buyers). And news is that many big operators like Vodafone & Idea are looking to expand their spectrum possession so that they can roll out 4G services in the circles they didn't win in the first 4G/BWA spectrum auction. Note: Government has already announced it will provide unified license, meaning any spectrum bought for any particular service(2G, 3G or anything) can be used to provide any other service. This is why Reliance Jio Infocomm is now applying for voice services also, that are to be provided on the spectrum they've earlier bought for 4G data services, under this newly announced 'Unified Licesnse'. And the government is also reported to be lowering the auction price further. And the reports suggest that whoever wins this spectrum in 1800Mhz range will resort to FDD-LTE technology as according to some studies most operators across the world with spectrum in 1800Mhz range have opted for FDD-LTE technology. So more FDD-LTE networks are expected to be lit out in our country. But now a days TDD-LTE is percieved to be better technology for rolling out 4G services especially for the reason that it uses single channel for both Upward/downward link and also more suitable for device-to-device communications, which is a main feature of future 4G systems. Following are the four important reasons for why TDD-LTE is favoured over FDD for 4G roll out: 1) It enables dynamic allocation of DL and UL resources to efficiently support asymmetric DL/UL traffic (adaptation of DL:UL ratio to DL/UL traffic).2) It ensures channel reciprocity for better support of link adaptation; MIMO and other closed-loop advanced antenna techniques such as transmit beam-forming.3) Unlike FDD, which requires a pair of channels, TDD only requires a single channel for both downlink and uplink providing greater flexibility for adaptation to varied global spectrum allocations.4) Transceiver designs for TDD implementations are less complex and therefore less expensive (restrictions in the number of DL/UL switching points). If you are interested to know what are the main differences between these two technologies and why the world is slowly moving towards adopting TDD-LTE technology, read this 10-page PDF of ASCOM. Note: TDD technology does have disadvantages compared to FDD, the main disadvantage is that FDD is considered to be more spectral efficiency(capable of using spectrum more efficiently) than TDD. At the end of day, as a normal user of any technology, you & me, would want it to be able to accessed by our devices seemlessly atleast in our country(just like 3G). But it won't be the case, I, as a South Indian may not be able to use 4G on my smartphone if I come to Bihar or UP, due to these technological differences in the way 4G rolled out in the concerned areas. I know technology may improve by the time we get 4G rolled out fully across India, infact myself have posted here in this forum that Samsung has already announced a new version of Samsung Galaxy S4, which is capable of switching between these two technologies seemlessly. But not every one can buy a Samsung Galaxy S4 or S5 or HTC One(or Two) or Sony Xperia Z(or A), whatever the high end phones that come at that time with this high end technology. And I certainly don't think this technology will be cheap by then that it will be offered in low cost smartphones from Micromax & like wise companies. We may have to resort to Data cards that support this seemless changing between two technologies but then again you have to carry another device like laptop, notebook or netbook to use them. st_7 138 Report post Posted August 31, 2013 HTC's Top Brass Caught Stealing Trade & Design Secrets If the slump, that HTC is already in, is not enough there are some news breaking out that some of its top brass from its design and R&D have involved in stealing trade & design secrets. The persons involved are Vice President of Product Design Thomas Chien, R&D director Wu Chien Hung and design team senior manager Justin Huang (who also personally sketched out the the design of HTC's latest flagishp One). With Chien and Wu are under custody, the others have been released on bail. The matter is reported to be under investigation under Taiwan's highest investigation bureau. Another shocking titbit for HTC, that has come from this, is that these three Chien, Wu & Huang have planned to setup a new design company, that is already registered under the name of 'Xiaoyu'. It is also being reported that these three officials are also being investigated for their false commission claims for the aluminium chassis design of HTC One. The HTC One is designed in house but these three greedy men have used an external design firm to charge HTC to the sum of $3,34,000(may be to used in setting up their design firm).Wondering how they were caught, apparantly the reports suggest that Chien was caught when he was downloading some secret files releated to the UI design of yet to be announced or released Sense 6.0 UI. They were planning to resign from HTC after claiming their mid-year bonuses.
mgdelhi 192 Report post Posted September 3, 2013 Microsoft buys Nokia's devices unit in a $7.2 billion deal One of the most enticing "what-ifs" of recent years has come true: Microsoft has purchased Nokia's Devices and Services unit, bringing the Lumia lineup under the Redmond roof. The move unites Windows Phone 8 with its biggest hardware supporter, giving the company the integrated mobile offering it's been looking for with Surface and other devices. When the deal closes in the first quarter of 2014, Microsoft will pay 3.79 billion Euros for Nokia's business, plus another 1.65 billion Euros for its portfolio of patents. (The 5.44-billion Euro total is considerably less than Microsoft paid for Skype in 2011.) 32,000 people are expected to transfer from Nokia to Microsoft, including 18,300 that are "directly involved in manufacturing." The purchase comes on the heels of what appeared to be a failed acquisition in June, at which point it seemed conversations had broken off entirely. Now the two come together, in what outgoing Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called "a bold step into the future." In an email, Ballmer cited the Lumia 1020 as an example of what the companies could do together, but said the phone hadn't caused the marketshare bump it deserved. "Now is the time to build on this momentum and accelerate our share and profits in phones," he wrote. http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/2/4688530/microsoft-buys-nokias-devices-and-services-unit-unites-windows-phone
