st_7 138 Report post Posted January 28, 2014 On February 5th this year, Government going to auction spectrum in 1800Mhz & 900Mhz frequencies. The stage is all set for an interesting battle, as all the GSM & Dual Technology(GSM/CDMA) operators are going to participate in this auction. Below is the Qualified Bidders list published by DoT. Experts believe while the Airtel, Vodafone & to some extent Idea's interest rests in Metros(Mumbai & Delhi) 900Mhz spectrum, Reliance Jio Infocom will be more interested to grab at least 5Mhz spectrum in each circle in 1800Mhz frequency as Mukesh Ambani's firm is looking to offer voice services along with Data services. Experts also of the opinion that Reliance Jio Infocom may bid for 900Mhz up to certain point to make bidding more interesting for outsiders but more difficult for Airtel, Vodafone & Idea. The AVOID along with Uninor/Telenor, Tata Docomo & Aircel will also be bidding for spectrum in 1800Mhz frequency so that they can offer 4G using FDD-LTE technology. rajanmehta 4,056 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 OMG! Facebook is buying WhatsApp messaging app for $19 billion Source New York: Facebook is buying mobile messaging service WhatsApp for $19 billion in cash and stock, by far the company's largest acquisition and bigger than any that Google, Microsoft or Apple have ever done. The world's biggest social networking company said on Wednesday that it is paying $12 billion in Facebook stock and $4 billion in cash for WhatsApp. In addition, the app's founders and employees - 55 in all - will be granted restricted stock worth $3 billion that will vest over four years after the deal closes. The deal translates to roughly 9 per cent of Facebook's market value. In comparison, Google's biggest deal, Motorola Mobility, stood at $12.5 billion, while Microsoft's largest was Skype at $8.5 billion. Apple, meanwhile, has never done a deal above $1 billion. The price stunned Gartner analyst Brian Blau. "I am not surprised they went after WhatsApp, but the amount is staggering," he said.

Bablus 66 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Comes to 40USD per customer also, the acquisition seems a little late.. the key reason fb bought whatsapp as we all know is for customer base of 14-22 years however this is exactly the base which has started moving out of whatsapp because of the clutter and adoption of oldies (like what happened to yahoo chat, orkut and fb itself)
nitink 279 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 Lenovo: Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon not our authorised resellers NEW DELHI: Chinese smartphone and PC maker Lenovo has issued an advisory cautioning consumers when buying its products from e-commerce companies like Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon.in as they are not its authorised resellers. "What we have noticed in the past few months is that some of these sites, and largely due to a marketplace kind of a set up, there are a lot of resellers that have cropped up, which are selling at very low predatory prices. These we believe may or may not be an authorised or genuine products," said Sudhin Mathur, Director, Smartphones, Lenovo India. He added that the company has issued an advisory with a list of all authorised stores and genuine partners. "E-commerce websites like Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon.in are not authorised Lenovo resellers. We encourage you to check your warranty entitlements when you buy from these websites," Lenovo said in the advisory on its website. In a bid to woo customers, e-commerce companies offer heavy discounts on products, which are often below prices offered in the offline market. When contacted, Snapdeal said it takes "utmost care" to list products only by those sellers who have the necessary authorisation to sell these products. "Customers can rest assured that all the products including Lenovo and Toshiba products which are available on Snapdeal.com are genuine and eligible for warranty," a Snapdeal spokesperson said. According to an Amazon India spokesperson, sellers are "contractually obligated to list genuine products" with manufacturer warranty. This applies to all brands, it added. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/tech/tech-news/hardware/Lenovo-Flipkart-Snapdeal-and-Amazon-not-our-authorised-resellers/articleshow/30685068.cms
KanagaDeepan 1,084 Report post Posted February 20, 2014 ^^^ With Moto G selling at flipkart exclusively and lenovo going to buy Motorola, this news is interesting... @Hitesh ji. Fb paid almost 40 usd per user. Whatsapp charges 1 usd for 1 year extension. It means it paid for 40 year subscription of every user. That's why I said they paid more. (Almost thrice what M$ paid for nokia and almost twice what Google paid motorola + patents) I wonder what fb will do with them. Either continue subscription model or free service with ad model or viber style free service with pay for sticker and extras model. Last year I extended whatsapp subscription for 5 years paying 150 Rs (got as offer) for both numbers. What I pay them per year is much cheaper than sms pack per month charges. But if they adopt their ad model here, I will not be happy. (Already I have stopped using fb for 6 months) Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

commonman 228 Report post Posted March 18, 2014 ^^^ Users won't receive a normal phone call. Instead they'll receive a push notification on their screens with the caller's name. Also, users can only connect with a conversation partner who also has Facebook Messenger for Android installed on their phone. Users cannot ring up a Facebook friend who is logged in through the website, and mobile or landline numbers cannot be dialled. No threat to Viber or even LINE.
silent_god 121 Report post Posted March 19, 2014 (edited) ^^^ They brought customer base, and no price is more or less for ready made customer base that too for no1 msg app tapatalking..... imho fb paid too high an amount for wa & I really don't know 'to achieve what ?' size of customer base is totally a function of price of application. In this case, WA was free for most of the users. Imagine a case, if WA was priced only let's say 10 usd / year, would they have got this many users ? Half of them ? even 1/4 looks doubtfool. on a slighly different business perspective.. instead, fb could have purchased some startup (telegram) or even moderately established players like line / viber etc OR could have made their own tool with keeping eventual cost of 10 usd/user/year & next thing they could have done is give every user 10 usd/year for some minimum usage of data. (let's say in some 100 MB / month etc). Evetaully cost model could have worked out @ 20 usd/year/user. Once you have got user numbers close to WA userbase, make that usage reward to 5 usd/year. Eventually making it to zero. They could have easily managed this changeover in half the amount. If direct credit is not possible, then in terms of credit money in google play account. Google will also be happy, since this will result in direct sale of 5 to 10 billion usd for their paid applications. Even develpopers also will be richer in few cases. it's like classic case of MS buying hotmail mainly for userbase (which was already big due to 'free' tag attached to it) & Google not buying any existing email service provider but launching their own tool- gmail. Google have certainly not regretted that decision. Edited March 19, 2014 by silent_god

csmart 472 Report post Posted April 16, 2014 Reliance Communications to raise call tariff by up to 20% Source NEW DELHI: Reliance Communications, India's fourth-biggest mobile phone carrier, will hike voice prices starting April 25, the company said in a statement, to counter an increase in input costs and higher spectrum payments. Reliance will increase tariffs on discounted and promotional plans for its prepaid customers by up to 20% and raise headline call tariffs to 1.6 paise every second from 1.5 paise, it said in a statement on Tuesday. Reliance and its main rivals, including Bharti Airtel, India's top phone carrier, and the local unit of Vodafone Group, last year raised voice prices for the first time in three years as they continued to cut discounts previously offered to lure customers in a highly-competitive market. Carriers have seen the benefits of reduced competition after several smaller rivals were forced by a court order to either shut down or scale back operations. "We continue to focus on growing profitable/paid minutes on our network and the current tariff hikes are part of our continued efforts to reduce free and discounted minutes, and offset the ever-rising costs of input materials," the company's chief executive officer, Gurdeep Singh, said in the statement. Indian carriers receive more than 80% of their revenue from voice call services.
