ami1 237 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 Good idea, even I have been looking for a cheap dashcam. Let me try out options you have mentioned and get back..
kshah 452 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 I checked with CarOo, I do not know any thing about programming so could not do much. Though it seems to be good software. I would like to do this way Dedicate entry level android phone with car mount as dedicated recording device. Starts recording as soon as charger is detedted (Ignition ON) Stops recording as soon as charges is disconnected( Ignition OFF)
ami1 237 Report post Posted December 10, 2013 I was thinking more like this: Put NFC sticker on your car mount and set up tasker (or various other apps) to start the app when I keep phone on mount. Since I was thinking of using my main phone for this when i am in car (i take calls on bluetooth headset. though there will be issues when I am dialling or typing sms) But will try the charging method also. Although dedicating a phone only as dashcam doesn't seem very cost effective. You get car dashcams with recording (saves last 5-10 minutes in case of accident etc) between 5-10K. kshah 452 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Dedicated dash cam in range of 5-7 k had very poor picture quality. I have purchased 3 different models and reached to this conclusions. There are cams costing more than 250 with Sony sensor gives good results.

Check out this. http://goo.gl/NxuCcV @ 6k Resolution mentioned is - "Adjustable - 1280x720 or 640x480", but not specified if camera or the LCD screen. Also, mentioned is 40 min / GB < so good resolution can't be ruled out.
kshah 452 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Problem is not resolution, problem is quality of image. In most camera CCD / CMOS used are of such poor quality that number of on coming vehicle is never readable.

Many have purchased as mentioned there 400+, but doesn't ship to India. But, that practical problem can be solved easily.
raju_a 31 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 How different is Smart Action (by Moto) from Tasker
kshah 452 Report post Posted December 11, 2013 Smart Action of Moto is very user friendly where as tasker is for advanced user. For person like me Tasker is too much. Tasker can do lot many more things than SmartAction though.
kshah 452 Report post Posted February 1, 2014 I have used this application on android phone and it works pretty well as DASH CAM https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard It starts recording as soon as phone is connected to charger and stops recording once charger is disconnected. Once can buy low cost JB handset and install with appropriate car mount and charger to have fully automated DASH CAM. In case of need can be used as NAVIGATION system if SYGIC is installed.
