Chirag 5 Report post Posted May 14, 2005 Can any1 help me wid this weird infection of the PC. My PC was goin slow over booting up etc. So formatted the C drive and reinstalled XP(SP1). But now, i can notice a weird Virus which probably is called Bloodhound. On simply booting the PC, the task manager shows the processes which are suspicious to me. The attached image shows the list. Also the C Drive has a executable file which to me, seems the root cause of the trouble. Even on deleting it, it jus comes back after a re-boot. The file name is hellmsn.exe. Now, i know that there might be trouble since i dont have a Antivirus s/w installed on my PC. Am looking for 1 myself. But Norton seems to be too heavy. And for the rest, haven't been able to get a registered version as yet. Can someone help me locate an effective patch or something?

If you want further information regarding how to make a secure gateway using linux then do ask me. Cheers ................................

raccoon 53 Report post Posted May 14, 2005 (edited) Chirag, obviously the virus is blocking out the AV sites... Anyway, you definitely have a fast enuf PC to run even a heavy AV like Norton (though you havent mentioned your RAM). Anyway, you could use Antivir, a much lighter and free AV. No mail scanning and frills here. Also, no incremental updates and updating can be very slow ...which can be a pain. Perhaps the lightest AV iv seen is Dr. Web (Russian). It has an amazingly small footprint of about 500 kB (if you unload the scheduler and frills). In comparision Norton soaks up whereabouts of 40 MB of precious RAM! But its not free. I'm trying it on my old 200 MHz, 32 MB RAM machine. It even has a DOS comm line scanner.... Edited May 14, 2005 by raccoon
anujit 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2005 You can download and use AVG Free Edition. The free edition is fairly good and they do have regular updates. Its quite light too on system requirements. For that matter most antivirus software except NAV (including Trend, McAfee etc) are very light products too. And in this day and age.... you don't have any excuse not to have an anti-virus. And since you're a moderator and you probably have all our contact details as well you're putting us at risk too!!!! You can download this from http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php
linuxguy 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2005 Have you tried M$. Antispyware? It's prolly some spyware.

Boot from floppy or NAV disk and run antivirus directly from that using navdx command for more options using navdx type navdx /? at the command prompt and also as linuxguy told run some antispyware(80 % of times all these junk unidentifed process will be spywares) Edited May 15, 2005 by ss_rakesh
anujit 0 Report post Posted May 15, 2005 Its a virus people. And tts just hijacked his host file. You can open it and edit it yourself and then update nav.
raccoon 53 Report post Posted May 15, 2005 (edited) Anujit, are you kidding??? McAfee is almost as resource hungry as NAV! Just check it out 1st!! In real life too, I never realised how much McAfee was slowing down my system until I uninstalled it (it was installed by my vendour). The only reason I was reluctant to remove it was 1) intertia 2) pretty good detection rates. But as far as spyware goes, I guess its detection rate is BAD! But then most AVs are bad at that ...in varying degrees... And Chirag, if we get spam and stuff from you cus of malware getting the upper hand with you, we will sue! Always practice safe hex guys. I do, and not once has any anything got a significant upper hand on my rigs. :'( Edited May 15, 2005 by raccoon
