Arun 795 Report post Posted May 16, 2005 Mumbai | May 16, 2005 13:49 IST Giving a major fillip to India's fledgling broadband story, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, the public sector utility that offers telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai, is slated to offer unlimited broadband access to subscribers. Starting Tuesday (May 17), customers will have to pay no monthly rental and would end up paying only for the data they download at the rate of Rs 2 per MB. Broadband in the Indian context has been defined as Internet connection offering speeds of 256 kbps or above. Earlier MTNL used to charge its customers a minimum monthly rental of Rs 399 and allow free downloads of up to 400 MB. Extra downloads, i.e. beyond 400 MB, used to be charged at Rs 1.20 per MB. What the revenue implication of this deal will be is not yet known. According to telecom sector analysts if usage actually picks up then MTNL will actually stand to gain over a period of time. According to MTNL sources, the public sector company was adding close to 200 broadband subscribers daily and may end up having close to 400,000 subscribers in Delhi and Mumbai by December-end. MTNL, which launched its broadband services on January 24, is also mulling the offering of cable TV over broadband to its customer base. MTNL may also soon provide cable TV channels to its broadband subscribers, says an Economic Times report. These channels, said the report, will also be free. Apart from this, the telecom PSU also plans to launch another plan -- TriB 599 -- which will offer download speeds of 512 kbps and 500 MB data download free to customers. For extra downloads, it will cost customers Rs 1.20 per MB. TriBand 599 will have a monthly rental of Rs 599. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

( i hope they dont name it 'The Fool Free Plan.... .) how can surfing be free when u have to pay for every byte of data that u download? i guess if u use it for one hour it will cost u about Rs. 40 ( assuming u download 20 MB of data in an hour), so in my opinion its perhaps the costliest broadband plan currently available in india......and they call it free?? Only fools would take up such a plan. When would these broadband companies realize that as long as there are data caps & all sorts of limits, nobody is gonna get fooled into the so called 'Free Broadband Access', in fact the whole concept of having data caps is against the positive sides of broadband, if you have more speed, u download more data and hence u need to pay more, so where is the broadband at dialup rates, i mean any data cap of less than 10 GB is just ridiculous. and to hell with '256k = broadband' in this age, i dont think it makes any sense calling anything below 1Mbps download speed,Broadband. i have a friend in UK who told me that for 80 pounds (Rs. 2550 approx.) he could get a 4 Mbps connection wihout any download caps and all, in fact he had'nt even heard of terms like 'download caps' and 'charge/ MB' Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I have been told by my service provider that 256kbps without download cap will cost Rs.1200/month, presently i am using 128kbps (unlimited download) at Rs.750/month. My daily usage is about 2 gb down and 2 gb up, my monthly use is about 68-70 gb down plus 68-70 gb up. So how much am I paying per mb? who cares. I pay about NOTHING per Gb of data transfer! Again, i dont have mtnl/ bsnl but I do have reliance, again, I never bought the damn data cable coz its 1100 bucks. MTNL and BSNL su.c_k Big Time. U people are being literally robbed here.
