I do not have a DVD writer but have been using a SONY CD Writer for more than 3 years... It never gave me any trouble...

So I think SONY DVD Writer might also be good!!!

Price is around 2300 for CD Writer Combo

and 5000 for DVD Writer

rightly said deepu. sony is one of the best brand available in optical drivers.

kams19, i would suggest to buy dvdrw only if you are really going to burn dvds. if you have no usage of burning dvds, and you are only going to read dvds, not write them, then i would strongly recommend you to go for combo drive.

todays optical drives are not so good, if you dont use them for 3-6 months, or use it very less, they start struggling to read media. so using them on regular basis is very important.

take the decission depending upon your usage.

hope this helps.

im using the sony dvd writer 710a.. all over its good, infact ive just begun using the dvd burning function full fledgedly.. the good part about the sony burner is that they bundle nero and you get frequent firmware upgrades. Lite-on otherwise is the same as sony from inside, dont know about the bundled software etc.. if ur budget is high, u could even look at plextor. Pioneer should be good also. LG supports dvd-ram writing functionality. BTW, does anyone know where to get DL discs at low costs? I cudnt find anyone selling them under 500-550.

errm whats DL discs dude? rewritable dvds u mean?

33010[/snapback]

DL means dual layer disks

I think the time in which it will be available in market for a very low price the Blue ray disk will be available and DVD's will in the Place of CD .

sony DVD writter costs around 5.3k in bangalore

and it is very good :P

ya the burner costs 5k+ and as mentioned above DL is double layer. Also, with the sony burner, the front panel can be changed to black(included in the package).

sorry to discourage you, but kams19, you did a mistake buying samsung drive. you should have bought sony or liteon.

samsung has a typical problem of tray not being ejected properly.

this particaular problem popsup after 6-8 months.

again its lense is also too bad, and it rejects scratched and olders cds after a few months.

life of samsungs optical drives is very less comparing to sony and liteon.

do exchange it if possible, or else cross your fingers and hope for the best.
