raharsha 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2005 (edited) Overseas roaming on CDMA phones ALOKANANDA GHOSH Calcutta, May 31: CDMA subscribers will now be able to avail of international roaming facilities in countries offering services on the same platform. Reliance Infocomm has already started providing international roaming in China and the US last week. It plans to extend the facility to Australia, Korea, Japan, Israel and Brazil in the next two to three months. “We plan to offer international roaming in all the countries that offer mobile services on the CDMA platform,” said a Reliance Infocomm spokesperson. “In Europe, which is predominantly a GSM market, we will integrate the CDMA network with that of GSM of Reliance Telecom to provide the roaming facility.” Tata Teleservices, the second private CDMA operator in the country, has also entered into a tie-up with US-based Syniverse to offer international roaming for voice services and SMS to its subscribers. Till now, Reliance India Mobile (RIM) subscribers had to avail of roaming through a GSM tri-band handset and a Removable User Identification Module (RUIM) card, which could be used on the CDMA network as well. The telecom major also plans to roll out its network in Jammu and Kashmir by the year-end and is in the process of laying its fibre optic network in the state. “Another major step towards providing 3G services on the CDMA network is upgrading to EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimised) that will allow data communication at a speed of 2.5 mbps on mobile handsets,” said the spokesperson. “This network will be ready by December. Currently, the speed is around 144 kbps. The rollout will, however, depend on spectrum allocation.” http://www.telegraphindia.com/1050601/asp/...ory_4811156.asp Edited August 10, 2005 by Chirag

Chirag 5 Report post Posted June 2, 2005 What abt the different spectrums that countries use? Will the same handsets be of any issue in the other country? I hope i read it right, that RIM CDMA can roam in other countries with the same handset!!
SexyGurl 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2005 Yes, it's with the same set .... (including the good ole LG 2030, which everyone seem to be carrying around). This roaming is on a cdma network abroad. (spectrums are also same). Using the gsm network world wide for roaming needed a gsm compatible-set, even for cdma customers. (that option still exists .. and would be useful in countries, which don't have a cdma network at all)
Dilbert 0 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 (edited) Till date only GSM operators in India were offering International roaming facilities and that too with a hefty security deposit. If news papers are to be believed then Anil Ambani will be making an announcement shortly about International roaming on RIM phones. It has supposedly tied up with leading CDMA providers of different countries. Also it seems to have filed its tarrif plan for TRAI approval. Whether it will be charging a hefty deposit like GSM operators is an unanswered question. Well, as of now lets keep our fingers crossed & see what announcement Ambani Jr will make, apparently the first one after taking over Infocomm.. <POST MERGED> Edited August 10, 2005 by Chirag

city02 63 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 the different CDMA frequency issue will be harder to resolve since it requires compatible handsets but at least those countries that have the same CDMA frequencies should become available in phase 1. phase 2 could launch multi-frequency CMA handsets and phase 3 could cover GSM countries currently a 7,500 deposit is required for int'l roaming. it should be reduced to 5 k for those with no balance due (post paid) and 2.5 k for DAPO customers who have paid on time... pre-paid should be simply handled through larger denomination vouchers like 1 k, 2 k, etc
Arun 795 Report post Posted August 10, 2005 Reliance Infocomm offers roaming to globe-trekkers on RIM [ Wednesday, August 10, 2005 12:48:08 AM] KOLKATA: The day isn’t too far when a CDMA mobile subscriber won’t need to grab a GSM handset to roam while travelling abroad. Reliance Infocomm is about to become the country’s first CDMA operator to offer global roaming to its 12m RIM subscribers. This will be the first major telecom-related announcement from Anil Ambani-controlled Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises (ADAE) after it assumed the reins at Reliance Infocomm. At present, global roaming is only offered by GSM operators. Reliance Infocomm has inked global roaming arrangements with some of the world’s top CDMA mobile service providers like China Unicom, US-based Sprint PCS, Pelephone of Israel and Telecom Mobile of New Zealand. It is poised to close similar deals with Verizon of US and South Korea’s SK Telecom. There’s also talk of a possible roaming alliance with Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, the world’s first 3G mobile service provider on the W-CDMA (wideband-CDMA) platform. Discussions on global roaming revenue share remain under wraps. Confirming the developments, an Infocomm spokesperson told ET, “Reliance Infocomm is poised to provide global roaming services to its 12m RIM subscribers. It has inked international roaming tie-ups with China Unicom, Sprint PCS, Pelephone and Telecom Mobile, with many more to follow. Global roaming will initially be available in the US, China, Israel and New Zealand. Subsequently, RIM customers will be able to roam in Japan, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and Thailand using their CDMA handsets.” Infocomm is mum on its global roaming tariff package, which is awaiting Trai approval. For instance, it’s unknown whether the company will waive a chunk of the mandatory security deposit before activating the global roaming facility as a promotional exercise. It is well known that GSM operators charge customers a hefty Rs 3,000 as security deposit before activating global roaming facility to destinations like the US or Europe. Anil Ambani, ADAE chairman, is learnt to have discussed Infocomm’s upcoming global roaming services launch during a recent meeting with Trai chairman Pradip Baijal. Once operator-level roaming alliances are in place, Infocomm’s subscribers will be able to globally roam across the US, Canada, China, New Zealand, Israel, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Australia, Hong Kong and Thailand. Global roaming tie-ups are in the offing with 13 CDMA operators in 12 countries spanning three continents to cover 90% of the world’s CDMA footprint. But it remains to be seen how Infocomm rustles up global roaming options in Europe and West Asia, which are traditional GSM bastions. Infocomm’s decision to flag off CDMA-based global roaming in China, US, Thailand and Hong Kong isn’t surprising. China, US, Thailand and Hong Kong were the country’s top four tourist destinations in ’04. “International roaming is a critical feature of global travel and Indians seem to be travelling a lot these days with the onset of fierce competition among foreign and domestic air carriers. While 5.3m Indians travelled abroad in ‘03, their number shot up 17% to 6.2m in ’04, top tourism industry circles said.
basant_jp 0 Report post Posted August 12, 2005 (edited) Well, this would be a breakthrough in the CDMA technology. In fact, some operators (like Verizon wireless) have already started the intl roaming on same handsets. It's just the start of roaming tie-ups among global telecom giants. Ofcoure, Reliance is one among them. Hopefully, they will launch this very soon. Atlest with US, before November this year actually before I travel. Anyway, this would bring the intl roaming costs dramatically. Verizon has almost one third rates for Intl roaming on CDMA network as compared to roaming with GSM network. The other alternative of cheap Global phones (CDMA cum GSM) seems to be taking really long. If the CDMA roaming proves successful, the future of Global Phones will be in danger -- even before they become popular. So far, I have come across two Global phones, one from Motorola and other from Samsung. A close look at both the phones - Motorola A840 Global Phone Features - Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) Mobile Web 2.0 browser Voice-activated dialing Voice mail GSM capablility with SIM card for service while traveling internationally Text Messaging Voice mail 1.2 megapixel camera with flash Color internal and external displays Contact directory to store up to 500 entries Built-in scheduler and currency converter TTY capable for the hearing impaired Samsung SCH a790/ip790 Features - Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) Voice-activated dialing Web browser Text Messaging Voice mail GSM capablility with SIM card for service while traveling internationally Text Messaging Voice mail Large 260K internal color display Vibrating alert Headset jack TTY and TDD enabled for the hearing impaired Scheduler, calculator, alarm clock and built-in contact directory VGA Camera phone Whatever, we deserve good phones and flawless and seamless roaming. I guess roaming with the CDMA network is the best deal. Afterall, why switch to GSM only beacuse you are roaming globally? Atleast I think so. Anyway, here're the pics of the above Global Phone handsets. Cheers! Edited August 12, 2005 by basant_jp
