Port Blair, June 15, 2005

India's largest private telecom company Reliance Infocomm today launched its services in the Andaman and Nicobar islands employing sophisticated satellite link to provide its high-tech voice and data services to the Union Territory.

The satellite links the archipelago of 572 islands with the mainland. A 31 km optical fibre cable network has been laid in Port Blair to connect seven sites at Abardeen Bazaar, Shadipur, Lambaline, Garacharna, Delanipur, Huddo and Mini Bay. Further, places like Diglipur, Ranghat and Car Nicobar of Nicobar Island have been connected via satellite.

Announcing the launch S P Shukla, President - Wireless Services and Products, Reliance Infocomm, said: "This project is part of our pan-India network expansion to connect over 5,700 towns and 400,000 villages by December 2005. Apart from bringing high quality voice connectivity, Reliance with its next generation CDMA 1x technology also brings high-speed data connectivity to the one of the fastest emerging tourism destinations."

"Reliance Infocomm's R Connect service that provides anytime-anywhere wireless Internet access has already become popular in many parts of India and we are sure that the people of Andaman and Nicobar and visitors will find it extremely useful to stay connected with the rest of the world," he said.

Reliance IndiaMobile has already worked wonders with its R World suite of data applications in the mainland and it is bound to catch the imagination of subscribers in the islands as well. R World's menu of wide offerings includes movie videos, music and ringtone downloads, TV news, examination results and ball-by-ball information on cricket.
