I found only following 3 updates on Microsoft site for Windows XP with SP2:

Security Update for Windows XP (KB896422)

PS: Here I'm talking about updates 4 Windows XP SP2 not for Internet Explorer for SP2.

updates. Not sure how many were b4 and how may after sp2

i would second the advice on automatic updates... 1 outta 5 hotfixes may not be needed, but its still worth keepin ur security up_to_date.

Open IE-->Tools-->Windows Update that should give you the updates that are required by your comp. And, if that site doesn't works, as in updates dont get downoaded properly, copy down the list of updates it says you require, manually download them and install them.

Also, all post SP2 security/critical updates would be required. My laptop which came pre-installed with WinXp Home SP2 has 21 updates installed.

Updates differ depending on machine configuration etc.

Some of those updates in those lists were installed BEFORE installing SP2, some AFTER.

Best is to connect to Windows Update from the PC in question.

For example unless you have installed IIS (not installed by default), you wont get an update for it!

thnx anujit..

Now I understood the whole thing.

The BEST way is to use Windows Update feature, It'll automatically tell me which updates r available for my windows.

Guys!

I want to know 1 thing...

I hv selected Notify me but don't automatically download or install them in Automatic Updates settings.

Now when I connected to net, it notified me about various updates & I clicked on Download button & its now downloading them.

I want to know that where it downloads them (the location in my hard disk)?

So that I can copy them in a safe place 4 future use & I'll not need to download them again if I reinstall windows in future...

thnx.

The downloaded files are saved in a number of locations including a folder titled "windows update" or something similar in your windows folder. And various temporary folders across different drives depending on space available etc.

To save the updates you need to do something else.

1. Use windows update to get a list of updates you require.

2. Click on the "more info" link thats at the end of the description of each patch/update item.

3. It will open a seperate new page for the item giving a description of the flaw what it affects etc etc.

4. On the right hand side of the page or somewhere in between the text (if there are different patches for different windows versions) you will see links where you can download the exe's for the patches. Click on the version of the patch you need and save the exe in a convinient location on your computer.

5. Sometimes the patches ask for validation. But you can just skip past that.

And there you are. Now Vishal can I sleep with your girlfriend?

SUCCESS!!! :)

I found the location, where windows updates r stored... ;)

First I selected Show all files & folders option in Folder Options to show hidden files also.

Then I opened C:\Windows folder, there I saw a folder named $hf_mig$, when I opened it, it showed many folders having name KB****** (some numbers like updates hv), when I opened them they contained nothing (0 size). :)

When updates downloading finished, I again tried to open those folders & VOILLA, they showed many files.

I thought that these r the folders that contain downloaded updates.

But it didnt work... :o

Then I got an !dea, I searched for KB890046 (an update that was downloaded) & then I got the folder, where these files r stored.

So guys the conclusion is that the folder is C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download...

In this folder, U'll see many folders (depends upon how many updates hv u downloaded) having name like 90ab7a7d58cf9102adba0adb5ddf1362, open the folder & U'll find another folder named Update, thats the folder which contains downloaded updates.

So now u can safely copy those folders to some other place 4 future use...

Guys, check this out

bow.gifLovely peice of work.... thanx a ton tankadobow.gif

saw this at another great forum... this is a must-share.

I compiled all the hotfixes for Post Service Pack 2 here.

http://rapidshare.de/files/2811136/HotFixes_New.rar.html

(now 30mb) removed un needed files

This comes in handy when u want to install the hotfixes over a network

to several hundred computers.

The hotfixes are current as of today July 2, 2005

There is a post install.cmd that you can just double click to

install the hotfixes to your existing PC, it will automatically update

your windows xp service pack2 with all the hotfixes.

Updating the regular way via the I.E. windows update can take a very very long time. Why waste your time and bandwidth.

When new updates are released i will update the link. Enjoy!

i think this compilation is one of the most sensible things ever done... about xp updates. I hate the microsh*t windows update process... like everyone else.

again, thanx tankado :D:clap:

Thats a good thing dude!

But I never believe such things.

I mean one can easily integrate his own applications or s/w in such packs & these apps can run in background without ur knowledge & can pass information to other comps thru net connection.

And many more things can happen.

So better to d/l update urself...

Guys I found the way to save all the updates on ur HDD.

Now I will show you how to do this.

There are several methods and we will discuss all of them.

1st Method: Easiest and only for Windows XP with SP2.

Firstly you have to configure your Automatic Updates Settings through MyComputer(right click)>>properties>>Automatic Updates.

autupdates2do.jpg

Choose the option shown in the above shot and click ok. Your SP2 Security Center may warn you but ignore or disable it. Now connect to the net and wait for some time. You will get a notification in the system tray that Updates are available for download. Now double click on the System Tray Icon and it opens up a window and now you can see all the updates listed with their KB Article Numbers. Here is a screenshot.

autupdates2ta.jpg

Now copy all the numbers to your notepad and now use the link

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=XXXXXX or click the link given in the box above.

Here XXXXXX is the 6 digit number you copied earlier. From the support page you will find a link to the patch and now you can download it convieniently.

2nd Method: Work for any Windows - Best Method

You can download all the updates that are available from Automatic Updates by using the Windows Update Catalog. For additional information about how to download updates from the Windows Update Catalog, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog

• Visit the Windows Update Web site:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

• Click Personalize Windows Update.

• Select the Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under

See Also check box.

• Click Save Settings.

• A Windows Update Catalog link appears under See Also.

• Click the Windows Update Catalog link.

• Click Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems.

• Click the appropriate product, and then click Search.

• Click Critical Updates and Service Packs.

• Locate the patch you want, and then click Add.

• Click Go to download basket. In the Type or browse to the download location of your choice box, type the full path for the folder in which you want to save the patch. Or, click Browse to browse to the folder. Click Download Now.

If you don’t find the link to Windows Update Catalog (as in SP2) then go to Administrator Options and there is a heading named “Update multiple operating systems” and under it link to Windows update Catalog is given.

A manual link (no guarantee on link working on diff Windows) to Windows Update Catalog is given below:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

I used this On WinXP SP2 and it worked and plus you can download updates for any Windows i.e. you can 98 updates while running XP. This works best for Networked PC’s.

Source: MS-KB 283147 - Automatic Updates Downloads Cannot Be Installed on Other Computers

3rd Method: Works in any Windows but not always

Another method to save the patch locally is to install the update 'as usual' from the Windows Updates page. Once the copy process is complete and the Install process is about to begin, look for the WUTemp folder in C:\ (or whatever drive you've installed Windows). This is the destination folder used by Windows Updates to save the hotfix. The hotfix will be deleted automatically once installed. Therefore, copy the WUTEMP directory contents to a new folder, while the install process has just started.

For Windows XP SP2, the installer is stored in a sub-folders under %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Another Note: Sometimes you find a long named file with random characters and without an extension in %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Try renaming the file by just adding .exe to the end of the filename. Do not modify anything else. Now right click and check its properties. It may turn out to be an update and its KB number is listed in its properties. You can now copy the update to any folder. Don’t move the update, just copy it to any location. This will work any time and even if you are not connected to the net.

Tip: After downloading the updates, save them to a CD if you're planning to apply across multiple systems or a stand-alone system without internet connection. Before applying the downloaded updates, you can run through Windows Updates scan (don't download yet) to know the list of Cricital Updates (Q######) pertaining to that particular computer. Note all of them to a piece of paper and install them one by one from the CD. This one works even better when combined with 2nd Method.
