I just saw this on rediff!!

What do you people think of this.

Geetha, a Rajya Sabha member from the Telugu Desam Party, on Thursday moved a private member bill in the House.

She demanded a ban on camera phones in public places arguing that these phones are increasingly being used to pry into private lives of people.

She also wanted the legislation to regulate the use of such phones by children.

Now, does Geetha have a point here?

Do you think the use of these latest gizmos in public places is a threat to your privacy?

Or are these merely fun tools as their manufacturers would want us to believe?

And, also, should they come with the statutory warning, "Keep out of reach of children"?

Poll: Should Geeta be whacked on the head?

If anyone wants to violate anyone's privacy they can buy a mini CAMERA to do it. Lets ban cams altogether!

No.

Definetly not a overall/carpet ban. "restricted use" might be more like it... in cetain places.

Infact, i dont think even t he govt can really "ban" a camera phone.

Banning camera phone is not the solution.

But atleast mobile manufactures should add a click sound in the phone s/w, when the photo is taken using the mobile.

The sound should be loud enough so that the person can know that he has been kept in the mobile...

Follow the HP privacy example ... I've read sometime back in TOI about a technology which was being designed by HP (of course it will not work on current phones), where if u have a phone with the said technology, and someone does not want to be photographed, he/she just needs to wear a "privacy ring", when someone using that phone snaps a pic of this person, the image gets blacked out!

Way to go.... but as Redshift pointed out ... a phaseout can be effective. well even anujit has a point there ... I have a watch cam... and well I have taken some FINE snaps with that ... at places where cameras and mobiles are not allowed!

well technology is a good master but a bad slave.... using it is left open to the end user ... if that MLA feels that a cam-phone ban is gonna help! god bless her... a cam watch is way cheaper ! (now ban that also! we will have something way better!)

Cheers

Ashok

Hmm ... thanks for that point Puneet ! unfortunately I'm not pursuing a P.Hd from IIT, hence a little illiterate about such trivial things like MLA's and MP's ... Happy calling them money-eaters !

I do not agree with Bans. Probably, they can try this ban of Camera Phones in certain places like Offices, Schools, Colleges etc...but use of Camera phones in public places should be allowed.

If this is the case then all vigilance cameras and even use of Cameras needs to be curtailed as well. Many places these vigilance cameras operate without your knowledge.

Infact, we are seeing office vigilance cameras capturing sexual activities of BPO workers!

Corrupt people always afraid of getting caught in the camera be it mobile or otherwise; no wonder this is discussed in Rajya Sabha!

People must behave properly in public places and they can not blame technology for their inappropriate behaviors.

Colleges down south are damn weird!! I had a weird experience at Satyabama, Chennai 2 yrs back! guys n gals cant talk or walk together in this 21st century in that college campus. No trees in the campus so that no two ppl can sit below them n mingle!! I mean, wat kind of thinking is that!!

Phones have become an essential part of our lives. Banning them is not an answer to it. Phone etiquette is wat is really required.

Thats right Chirag ! Colleges here are pretty strict especially the private colleges. In my college (which is affiliated to Anna University), cell phones were not allowed inside the college campus even long before the University announced the rule this week. Even though the ban may force students to stop using their phones in the open (iniside the college campus), they will continue to bring their phones to college/class and use them without showing it off to the authorities, just like how we have been doing :P

Now if students carry even ordinary cell phones in campus, these will be confiscated, auctioned and the proceeds will go into a Students Welfare Fund.

It's a ban, the authorities say, was badly needed and they seem keen to enforce it.

"They forget to switch them off. It disturbs the class when it rings. They play with SMS, download unwanted pictures. Cyber crimes are increasing," said Dr D Viswanathan, VC, Anna University.

There are even weirder colleges than this. There are colleges which allow admission to both girls and guys but they have classes seperately for girls and guys that too on seperate times. And ofcourse girls have all lady staff and guys have all Gents staff.

I will not name the college that has this facility :P

Today's Update:

Anna university conducted a "raid" in the hostels to bust students with cellphones ;):P

It was supposed to be a routine 'educational' visit to encourage students to spend more time on studying.

WHAT EVER :0

This moral policing thing is getting worse by the day.

OMG!!!! Anna's chaps are lucky that they do not have me there...... seriously I care a damn about what anyone does as long as they give my private space.... and any invasion is dealt with heavily.

What is the problem if a student has a cell phone ? I mean in all rights he can use one ... is India in such a shape, that u cannot even own a mobile ????

Cheers

Ashok

People unnecessarily beating around the bushes on co-education in South. The topic was on to something.

Mobile phones will definitely distract students while attending classes. It will not only distract them alone but also others as well. Every college must have a mechanism for students to contact their parents/gaurdians at any time. This is more than sufficient for any student.
