anujit 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 Ok guys for all your speculations on every fancy or not so fancy Nokia CDMA handsets and other crap. Heres who's going to be the actual next hand set vendor..... ittsssss..... (drum rolls)..... Huawei!!!! And how do I know..... http://www.relianceinfo.com/Infocomm/Rim/h...ers.html#huawei . Well kinda self explanatory isnt it. Why would they have a list of service centers for Huawei handsets! Of course quality still remains a big concern for RIM --- remember GTRAN and hell the damn battery still over heats even on a Nokia 6255!! So god knows how these guys will be (they are Chinese after all!)!
ani_meher 42 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 Maybe you are right. The news of Huawei to set up manufacturing unit in India was in May itself. Maybe its talk with Reliance were successful. Here's a sample handset from Huawei. from this page But it is some "CDMA 450", which is above my head. Any techies, please? Also, read: Let's see what this China based company actually does, though I could find only this picture of CDMA handset (others were WCDMA).
Vishal Gupta 4 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 CDMA 450 The CDMA 450 system operates in the 450MHz frequency band previously occupied by analogue Nordic Mobile Telephony (NMT) systems. CDMA 450 systems are part of the CDMA 2000 group of technologies currently being deployed worldwide. These include systems operating at 450MHz, and wideband systems operating at 850MHz, 1,800MHz and 2,100MHz. The emerging popularity of CDMA 450 is due to the lower costs of deployment for this type of network. The investment for the infrastructure development in this project is estimated at $160 million. CDMA 450 ADVANTAGES CDMA 450 is a 3G technology which uses CDMA 2000 1X air interface. The main advantages of this are: * 450MHz signals result in lower propagation loss and so can yield a broader coverage than higher frequencies in the same CDMA 2000 group * Broader coverage means that up to 80% less base stations are required for the network and thus the cost of infrastructure development is much lower * Coverage for CDMA 450 is up to 50km, whereas in comparison W-CDMA has a propagation range of only 2km * CDMA 450 has data speeds approaching 2.4Mbps (Huawei have achieved 1.9Mbps in trials) and can support a range of services such as push-to-talk, location-based services and UIM, the GSM compatible SIM card * With CDMA's standard 1.25MHz channels the 450MHz band gives excellent capacity * UIM support means that CDMA 450 roaming should also be possible in the future * It is a cost-effective way for countries with large rural areas to bring 3G services to the majority of their population * CDMA 450 is also fully compatible with future upgrade paths such as to EV-DO 1X and EV-DV 1X CDMA 450 NETWORKS Inquam, the parent company of Radiomovel, was set up by UK-based Qualcomm in 2002 to purchase old defunct NMT 450 networks and migrate them to CDMA 450 technology. Huawei, a Chinese telecommunications company, specialises in providing CDMA 450 technology and has deployed networks across 43 countries worldwide, many of them in Eastern Europe. Huawei and Inquam formed a strategic partnership in 2002 to develop CDMA 450 networks across Europe. Huawei, as part of this arrangement, was contracted by Radiomovel to supply and install a CDMA 450 end-to-end network early in 2003 (including terminals and handsets). Huawei supplied its C&C08 iNET International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT2000)-based base station and serialised terminals. It is also providing some of the location-based services to be provided by Radiomovel, such as GPSOne, high-speed packet data services and multimedia services such as video phone, video-on-demand (VOD) and internet access, aside from the basic voice and messaging services the company will provide. Both V5.2 and SS7 interfaces are provided to meet the different networking needs of new business subscribers. The system also includes WLL capability, which can connect subscribers to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) using radio signals as a substitute for the copper wire connection between the subscriber and the switch. This will help to connect subscribers in very rural parts of the country that have an inefficient or non-existent telephone service. CDMA 450MHz HANDSETS The number of 450MHz handsets is limited at the current time since the CDMA 450 system is still being deployed in many countries. Large handset manufacturers such as Nokia are not committing themselves to producing 450MHz versions of their CDMA handset. Huawei have called for dual or triple band handsets to be developed for use with CDMA. The 450MHz handset market will continue to be dominated by Chinese and Taiwanese suppliers. Huawei, as one of the most conspicuous players in the CDMA 450 market in terms of infrastructure, has now chosen to release its own branded handsets. It is these that will be first released for use on the Radiomovel network.
anujit 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2005 450 Mhz handsets wont work in India. CDMA operators use the 800 MHz band here. Although the 450 Mhz band is being considered for 3G services for CDMA operators in India.

kshah 452 Report post Posted September 15, 2005 technologically its said CDMA 450 is at par with 800 or 1800 0r 2100 but I doubt intensions of reliance to provide real good handsets. It seems they want manufacturer who remains under their obligation, first it was LG, then they tried with GTRAN but did not worked, now it seems Huawei BEAWARE, as Anujit said.
