    YAKKERS rejoice, the watchdog has just staved off an attack on your wallet. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked the department of telecommunications (DoT) not to issue directives disallowing differential tariff for intra-network calls.

    Reliance, for example, charges just 40 paise per minute for a call made from one Reliance number to another Reliance number under some of its schemes. Similarly, Hutch-to-Hutch local calls cost 50 paise per minute, and Airtel-to-Airtel local calls cost Re 1 per minute under some schemes. Such intranet discounts are offered by almost all the mobile operators.Trai said a directive disallowing operators to offer intra-network discounts would be against the interests of the more than 60 million mobile subscribers as it would lead to an increase in tariffs.

    DoT had earlier planned to issue a directive asking all the telecom operators to withdraw tariff schemes discriminating between calls terminating within the network of the same operator and calls terminating in other networks.

    “After analysis of various tariff plans offered by the service providers, it is seen that all operators including stand-alone operators are offering differential tariff plans to their customers and such tariff plans are consumer friendly and increase competition,” Trai has told DoT. “We feel that such consumer friendly plans should not be interfered with and such a step would be against DoT’s objective. This may also later lead to a demand for similar tariffs between fixed-fixed and fixed-mobile calls, which would be of disadvantage to fixed operators,” said Trai in a note to DoT. All over the world the operators give lower tariffs to the subscribers for calls terminating in their own networks.

but reliance has stopped giving new Reliance India Phone connection on saturaday under plan 700 under which Reliance to Reliance Intranet STD calls are free.

Plan 700 has nothing to do with this ruling, in all probability it has been stopped because of the TDSAT ruling whereby FWP will be considered as WLL(mobile) and would attract ADC to be paid to BSNL, and with ADC to be paid to BSNL Plan 700 no longer makes any business sense.

yep .. thatz true ... when ADC is to be paid to BSNL, what effective margin can Reliance expect out of the 700 voucher ? In all essence it will loose in to the competition..

Public sector companies always win. Because they follow the Govt. and u all know about the Govt. Only hope is Supreme Court! But thier decision on this matter may take and I think, till than, Govt. will chnaged their policy. Only Hope!

One more shock for all you guys. Get collect 220 voucher for RIM as company has stopped the voucher till further notice from Today. Only voucher available in market can be used till 31 Dec.

Same happens with 770 voucher of Reliance India Phone.

it went like this

PLAN 700 (unlimited free on-net callz) ---> PLAN 3000 (unlimited free on net callz) ---> right now withdrawn back

it was was like PLAN 700 but very very expensive

they have not discontinue the on net service only they have stoped the 770, 220, 480 On net coupon. The coupons available in market are to used till 31 Dec. the affect of this comes only after that.

Subscibers and operators of mobile services can now rejoice! The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), not to ban mobile operators from offering customers intra-network discounts. TRAI says that its move is in the best interests of consumers.

Across the globe, operators offer lower tariffs to subscribers for calls terminating within their own networks. In India too, most mobile operators follow the same tradition.

For example, Airtel-to-Airtel local calls cost Re 1 per minute, while Hutch-to-Hutch local calls cost 50 paise per minute under their "Talk 299" scheme. Reliance Infocomm charges 40 paise per minute, for calls made to its own network. Further, large mobile operators charge lower STD calls for intra-circle networks.

Earlier DoT had planned to issue a directive, asking telecom operators to withdraw discriminating tariffs for intra-network calls. If such a directive had indeed been issued, over 60m mobile subscribers would have suffered the burden of increased tariffs.

Regarding its latest ruling, TRAI told DoT that it had analysed the tariff plans of various service providers and the resultant findings were that these tariff plans are both consumer friendly and increase competition.

TRAI said that its decision was in keeping with the objectives of DoT and that if a directive against intra-network discounts had been allowed, there would be a demand for similar discounts with respect to fixed-mobile and fixed-fixed calls.

According to official sources, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has directed DoT not to bypass TRAI and to seek its prior approval before going ahead with any tariff-related directive.
