Nokia Aims New Phones At Emerging Markets

HELSINKI (Reuters) - The world's biggest mobile phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) launched four new handsets on Wednesday, including two aimed specifically at fast-growing emerging markets.

Growth in demand from developing countries helped Nokia sell 67 million phones in the third quarter and the Finnish mobile firm has said it will continue to improve its handset line-up.

The four new phones, all of which use CDMA technology, comprise two mid-price models and two at the cheaper end, but Nokia gave no expected pricing details, with operators often working such handset prices into the cost of their packages.

CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, is the world's second most common phone technology after GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, and is common in Latin America, the United States and parts of Asia.

The cheaper 1255 and 2355 phones have features not usually available on lower-cost phones, Nokia said in a statement released in Brazil.

The 1255 has a two-way hands-free speakerphone and voice recorder and allows up to four hours of talk time and 10 days of standby time.

The folding-type 2355 phone has a color screen, FM radio and a flashlight. Both are expected to go onto the shelves in the first quarter of next year.

The company is aiming to regain ground in Latin America, having lost market share there and in North America in the third quarter, compared to the April-June period.

Nokia also announced two mid-range CDMA handsets, the 2855 and 6165, both of which can use Bluetooth short-range radio links and stream audio and video.

The 6165 also has a 1-megapixel camera and will be able to use positioning information for applications that find local information about points of interest and directions.

The 2855 and 6165 will go onto the market during the first half of next year, Nokia said.

Nokia is introducing the mid-range Nokia 2855 and 6165 mobile phones, each weighing under 4 ounces and compatible with a range of Bluetooth technology enabled accessories such as wireless headsets and car kits as well as other Bluetooth technology enabled devices including laptop PC's and even new automobiles.

Besides Bluetooth technology, both the Nokia 2855 and 6165 phones feature support for downloadable Java or BREW applications, streaming audio and video content and customizable MIDI ringtones. Both the Nokia 2855 and 6165 phones are expected to be available during the first half of 2006.

"With the Nokia 2855 and 6165 phones, Nokia is filling a gap for Bluetooth technology enabled CDMA handsets at a mid range price point," said Larry Paulson, vice president of product marketing for Nokia's CDMA business group. "Along with the Bluetooth technology, consumers will be attracted by the hallmark Nokia design and will appreciate the ease of use delivered by the signature Nokia user interface, while operators will be drawn by the ability to deliver value-added services like applications, messaging and ringtones."

The Nokia 2855 features a color palette including metallic-finish indigo or cabernet. Nokia says it is the company's most affordable Bluetooth technology enabled CDMA handset. The device comes with a 128 x 160 pixel 262K color main display, supports MMS (network dependent) and customizable themes. It features a phonebook with room for up to 500 entries - each allowing for 5 phone numbers, e-mail address, web address and a notes field per entry. Additional features of the Nokia 2855 phone include an integrated handsfree speakerphone, voice memo recorder and voice dialing, plus high-fidelity MP3/AAC ringtone support.

The Nokia 6165 phone shares the feature set of the Nokia 2855 phone, with the addition of a full 1megapixel camera with flash and built-in infrared technology to provide support for all major types of connectivity - Bluetooth, USB cable, and infrared. Support for location-based services allow the Nokia 6165 phone to take advantage of mobile applications that take advantage of positioning information for accessing information on nearby points of interest, directions and more (network dependent). Other features of the Nokia 6165 phone include support for capturing, sending and viewing video, and streaming video capabilities.

Now the question is which phone will be released first.

6155 or 6165 or 6265

The difference between 6155 and 6165 is as follows

6165 has bluetooth and web browser.

6155 has FM radio.

Regarding browser, We've to wait and see whether Reliance will allow to use in-built browser rather than using their downloaded jbrowser for R-Surf. 6255 users has to pressure Reliance to allow using their in-built browser rather than their jbrowser which is user-repelling. Since R- Surf is still not active, 6255 users can make this happen.

This will help future 6165 and 6265 users.

As you already know 6265 has everything to offer in a series 40 phone.

So hold your breath.

just read the latest pres release...dont know if this is being talked about in another post...appologies if it is..i jus read about it..nokia has opnely launched the nokia 6155 n 6165.so i guesss the 6265 will not be in before mid 2006.what say?

yup but only for india! outside the craze for nokia fones is very less if compared to india here almost all fones i have seen are nokia, there this is not the case

I don't like nokia phone specially in Reliance. They are very costly and second doesn't have some feature of R World. I basically used Reliance Mobile for R World only.

And now a days the weight of the NOKIA's phone is very high. But the nokia is the one company who make phone according indian condition. So they are working great in India.

I think reliance java support for nokia is bad comparison to lg samsung Always hav Application error in there Rworld application.may be purposely by reliance not supporting nokia were nokia hav inbuilt video facility in there current sets but reliance not supporting

abhay, i use a samsung. I never liked nokia phones. I was excited because nokia is releasing low cost phones for the inidan market which will help the cell phone penetration in india and drive the prices down further

Well i want to say dat they r taking more money for same features & technology compared to rivals.& because of there strong marketing & dealer (margin ) support it is popular & known to evry one.since samsung fons r also equaly good nowadays.

yeah mayb nokia does take away more from us only becoz of brand equity....

for instance nokia 6225 isnt half as good as lg rd 6130....and nokia is 2000 more expensive than then lg 6130

Two major features with which Nokia doesn't match with the rivals are Ringtone Quality and LCD/TFT Resolution.
