Internet Cafe Owners Logged Out In Solapur

Internet cafe owners logged out in Solapur, Maharashtra

Internet cafe owners in the city are sore with the ‘lack of cooperation and poor internet connectivity’ from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). Especially hit are those who started their business by taking bank loans.

The BSNL introduced broadband service in August, attracting most of the internet cafe owners. While a few of them opted for the 256 kbps offer, others went in for the 1 Megabyte and 2 Megabyte service. But today, many of them feel let down by BSNL after facing repeated disconnection without prior notice. The one person who is responsible for the internet section of the BSNL is often not traceable.

‘‘Our internet service has been disconnected and we have been forwarded vague reasons, like the disconnection was from Delhi or Bangalore. We are tired of the department,’’ lamented one internet cafe owner.

‘‘For the last three weeks, we have been facing connectivity problems in the service line, low speeds and constant disconnection. We have lost almost 80 per cent of our regular customers this month,’’ he maintained and added that he was unable to pay charges for the BSNL connection and the installments to repay his loan.

On Wednesday, a delegation of internet cafe owners handed over a memorandum to BSNL authorities and aired their grievances, demanding prompt restoration of internet services. They also demanded a waiver of charges for October, as there was no service on most of the days. BSNL gets around Rs 1 lakh in revenue from internet cafes as it charges Rs 9,000 for 2 MB and Rs 5,000 for 1 MB connections per month.

Private users too have come forward with complaints against BSNL. Rahul Manthalkar, a regular user, says he failed to get connectivity at home and hence opted to go to a cafe. But that too proved useless, and he says, ‘‘I don’t know where to complain. BSNL should cancel the service if it can’t provide proper service.’’ Vaibhav Kulkarni, a sales manager in a private company, said that there was little choice left but to shift to the more expensive Reliance Web World.

The problem is that only these telecos have the telephone networks over which they can provide ADSL. Abroad any ISP can provide ADSL over any telephone companies phone line......they should do that here. Without that, MTNL and BSNL have a monopoly (almost).

Yes, the way we can use other ISPs (like VSNL, Satyam, etc) for dial up, we should be able to use ADSL with other ISPs!

We NEED a DEDICATED ISP not these stupid Telcos... and please quote your news source!

dude i dont remember where i got that news from! i just randomly surf the web for some telecom or tech news

here are my primary sources hope this should help ya

adwait, that is what TRAI was harping about - Unbundling the local loop!

46012[/snapback]

unbundle the local loop for city-wide connectivity but from there everyone should have their own network reasons :-

1) eg :- IF for assumtion reliance uses MTNL's network to provide internet then if the MTNL lines are f***ked for some reason (then reliance customers have to take the beat)*

2) but if the city wide coverage is provided but reliance and mtnl just gives a POA in that city then the things are diffrent . in this case dependency is reduced a lot

3) and if the connetion is wireless then the connectivity is 99.99% up!

eg :- i have been using FWT since its launch . till date dint have a single min of downtime not even during the RAINS in bbay. and we all know the condition of MTNL lines during that period

* 1) considering the fact MTNL employess are lazy and they wont rectify their network even if reliance tells them to

2) reliance and mtnl are just taken as an eg.it can be any company

No. MTNL's network is better than you think. If reliance or any other operators enters into an agreement then they will surely kick mtnl's butt if they receive complaint from users about mtnl's line quality :)

1)The MTNL network is certainly good. The only reason it went down in CERTAIN places was because of that fact that water entered the exchanges/junction boxes causing short circuit. That has nothing to do with the network/qiring quality.

2)Wireless networks are fine for voice communication but when it comes to high speed communication, wireless can't beat wirline communication. The maximum speeds right now for CDMA network is 144 kbps (with 1X RTT). When EVDO is used, the speed will increase. At the same time, the maximum speed possible on the MTNL network or any other wireline network with ADSL 2+ technology is 10 MBPS. Higher speeds are also possible with VHDSL HDSL etc. Wire line communication gives a much much higher maximum speed as compared to wireless.

wi-fi supports upto 54 mbps

wimax upto 40 i suppose --> dont remeber that , please conform

i never said lauch internet on CDMA, cdma was never ment for internet its ment for voice. i mean use wi-fi or wimax --> which is in testing phase right now

with wireline i again say

1) mentaince problem

2) connectivity problem -> because they cannot go any where and everywhere

3) infrastruture problem --> expencive laying cables and mentaining them

with wireless

1) just need a tower and a reciver ! none of above mentioned problems

2) easy mentaince because the problem can only be @ two places at clients end or @ servers end --> no wires to rectify

3) can reach any where --> specially my house which just has sify + mtnl or pacenet connectivity :P

4) less cost of infra

i am just comparing it this way if there are other points plz tell me :quest:

Just wait here. If you are getting carried away by the prospects of getting seamless connectivity using Wi Max or Wifi or any other wireless technology then I am sorry to cripple your dreams! I have a wireless network at my place. All equipment is top of the line 802.11g. But I still get transfer rates of not more than 5.5Mbps when I am in two different rooms. Yeah, the signal is heavily attenuated due to a lot of barriers at my place along with a lot of electronic equipment interfering with my wifi signals... So just imagine the wireless internet connection from BSNL or MTNL... You will have to go near the window to get a clear signal and then you will get a good speed.

Just imagine how the operators will get away with cheating you! Selling you a 10Mbps connection but blaming your equipment for slow connectivity and bad signal.

My point, all technologies have their pros and cons. Wirelss connectivity is promising but lets not get carried away just yet. This is India afterall...

hmmm yup this is indian offcourse but my point was wirelss is better than wireline! no considerations on india as a factor was given!

2) 5.5 mbps ! that may be as far as i know ur hdd limit. i mean how fast a hdd can transfer after all

a frnd of mine has a 3.0 ghz processer with sata and ample of ram! but his speeds also not go more than 6.something mbps

i think thats a hdd lmit

my computer dose not go more than 1 mbps even if i connect the computers through wireline

I have a SATA hd. The slow speed is certainly NOT due to the harddisk speeds. It's due to the huge electronic intereference that is present at my place. The connection drops to a 11b and then goes down to 5.5Mbps. When I switch off other electronic equipment, it goes upto 11Mbps or more.... JFYI, I dont get FM at all in the room where I have my PC and other equipment. While in other rooms I get it clearly :(
