Reliance registers record subscriber no

Within four months of Anil Ambani taking over its reins, Reliance has become the first telecom company to achieve the 15-million mark in subscriber base.

The subscriber base includes both CDMA and GSM. The CDMA subscriber base (Reliance Infocomm) is about 13.9 million, while that of GSM (Reliance Telecom Ltd) is 1.6 million.

"This gives us close to 25 per cent share of the total (mobile) subscriber base of about 68 million (both CDMA and GSM)," the company said.

Reliance is followed closely by second-ranked Bharti, which has a customer base of 14.7 million. State-run BSNL comes third with a base of about 12.5 million.

Tata managed to add around 434,000 subscribers on Oct ... nearly twice of what it usually does.

(It added about 250,000 last month).

Both figures just for mobile services.- Do not include FWP / Walky connections sold by Tata. (Mobile + FWP/Walky for Tata was about 6 lacs for Tata).

Reliance was lukewarm ... addea a total of 5 lac connection, including mobile and FWP, and 355,000 mobile alone.

India adds more CDMA based users in Dec

India, the world's fastest growing major mobile phone market, added 1.26 million new users in December for services based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, an industry body said on Friday.

Overall, the red-hot wireless sector added a whopping 4.447 million new mobile customers last month -- a new high -- bringing the total number of wireless users in Asia's third-largest economy to 76.44 million.

Nine GSM carriers said on Thursday they added 3.187 million customers in December -- the highest ever since services were launched more than a decade ago. About 58.5 million are on the widely prevalent Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) platform.

Even the CDMA additions in December were the highest ever reported by the four CDMA carriers, led by Reliance Infocomm Ltd.

These companies added 1.18 million CDMA users in November.

Intense competition and expansion of networks in untapped rural areas are fuelling demand for mobile services in India where less than 8 per cent of the billion-plus population use such facilities.

Local mobile call tariffs as low as 2 US cents a minute are driving increased cellular usage in India.

The Association of Unified Telecom Services Providers said top-ranked CDMA services provider Reliance Infocomm added 785,547 users in December, boosting its CDMA user base to 13.014 million customers.

Second-ranked Tata Teleservices Ltd added 472,927 CDMA customers in December, raising its user base to 3.68 million.

Other mobile players include GSM carriers Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd, state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Hutchison Essar Telecom Ltd, the Indian wireless operation of Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd.
