Airtel records fastest million in Mumbai

Bharti Tele-ventures’ Airtel has enrolled a million subscribers in Mumbai, the fastest operator in the GSM segment to do it. It has also added the maximum number of subscribers during October 2005 with over one lakh new additions, almost equaling the combined new subscriptions of BPL, Orange and MTNL.

However, on an all-India basis, Reliance Infocomm is still ahead of its competitors. According to data compiled by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India, the overall subscriber base of Reliance (including both CDMA and GSM) stood at 1.54 crore while that of Bharti was 1.47 crore at the end of October 2005. But Bharti still saw a higher rate of additions at over 6.7 lakh subscribers while Reliance added just over five lakh in October. Bharat Sanchar Nigam’s subscriber base as on October 31 was 1.25 crore; Hutch’s was just over one crore; and Idea’s at slightly over 60 lakh.

Jayant Khosla, CEO of the Mumbai circle, Bharti Tele-ventures, said, “Our record additions during October show that people are responding positively to our products and services.” Airtel is the leader in the low-end segment with a market share of 74 per cent but in the small and medium enterprise segment Reliance Infocomm leads with over 80 per cent market share. A Reliance official said its total package of a connection with a phone as well as fixed line was popular with small set-ups which wanted connectivity with little hassle.

For the industry as a whole, the Mumbai circle has the distinction of adding the maximum number of subscribers with over two lakh additions in October. Orange added a little over 40,000 subscribers, BPL added around 11,000 and MTNL netted another 51,000 subscribers.

Hutch has recently introduced its Rs 10 recharge, which allows full talk-time – the lowest recharge in the industry so far. Airtel had earlier introduced the Rs 50 recharge coupon. Khosla pointed out that the Rs 200 recharge coupon, introduced recently, was also popular but the most sought after ones were recharge values between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 for all the operators.

No .... mostly because of churn in GSM ... most of those are converts from other GSM (not 1 million new handsets bought !).

So, Airtel's gain is Orange's / Dohphin's / BPL's loss (...atleast most of it).

And I also think ... those "new" Airtel customers are also keeping their old Orange/Dolphin/BPL SIM cards with them (so that if they want, they can get back to the old operators in six months, in they want to).

IMPLICATION: There is clearly a great amount of double counting in the subscribers numbers among Airtel / Orange / Dolphin / BPL.

(If a new mobile subscriber .. by which I mean ... someone who didn't own a mobile, or owned a Reliance connetion .. wanted to pick up Airtel) ..he'd have to buy a new GSM set.

Most of the flow of subscribers to Airtel, has not been from Reliance (because of unique handset), but from the GSM operators.

Offcourse, Orange, BPL, Dolphin won't revise their subscribers numbers downwards till six months since THEY BELIEVE, the SIM cards are still valid .... and those shifted Airtel customers, are really their customers.

NOW, ISN'T THAT A SEXY EXPLANATION :)
