abhay 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2005 Indian carriers offering mobile services based on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology added 790,738 users in October, raising their total customer base to 14.35 million, their industry body said on Thursday. The CDMA subscriber base grew 5.8 percent in October, the association, which represents six carriers, said in a statement. More than 2.9 million customers in total entered the world's fastest growing major mobile market in October as cheap call rates lured more people into the 68.5-million-strong sector. About 2.48 million entered the market in September. On Wednesday, the industry body for rival technology GSM reported its highest-ever monthly addition of 2.11 million users, taking the total GSM customer base to 52.98 million. India's mobile business has boomed as more people use mobile phones due to the sluggish growth of fixed-line services, leading to a rise in foreign investment in the sector. Wireless services penetration is less than 7 percent in billion-plus India compared with more than 28 percent in neighbouring China, the world's largest mobile services market. So carriers are expanding throughout the countryside, since less than 30 percent of India is now covered. India's top mobile services firm, Bharti Tele-Ventures Ltd., 30.8 percent owned by Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. , added 670,000 GSM users in October, its best ever month, taking its customer base to 14.74 million. Last month, Britain-based Vodafone Group Plc bought 10 percent of Bharti for $1.5 billion. State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., the second-ranked player, has a GSM user base of 12.51 million customers including about 600,000 subscribers added last month. Third-ranked Reliance had a mobile user base of 11.81 million customers. Hutchison Essar Telecom Ltd., the Indian unit of Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. <2332.HK>, added 410,000 users last month, for a total of 10.16 million. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articl...121,curpg-1.cms

SexyGurl 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2005 CDMA offers galore, users talk the talk Service providers turn the heat on each other by launching offers, some exclusively for Gujarat. Aditi Varma Ahmedabad, December 9: NOW, cellphone users can talk to their heart’s content without causing themselves heartburn, what with CDMA service providers turning the heat on each other by launching fantastic offers. Some of these schemes have been launched exclusively for Gujarat. ‘‘The market in Gujarat offers a lot of potential. Gujaratis have a lot of buying power and business is good here. It is a great market to test a new product or offer,’’ says a senior Reliance Infocomm official. Tata began the war by introducing a scheme offering non-stop incoming calls for two years. To counter this, Reliance came up with a similar three-year plan. For Rs 2,999, Reliance offers LG CDMA RD 2530 cellphone under this scheme. Tata offers six handsets, including three with single-colour screens, for charges ranging from Rs 2,499 to Rs 4,699. Businessman Bhavik Patel says, ‘‘I opted for Reliance because I receive a lot of calls. The three-year plan sounds like a good deal.’’ Tata subscriber Ashok Varma says, ‘‘I opted for Tata because I feel that it’s a reputed company and will not cheat its customers. Moreover, the new scheme means that I will not have to recharge for the next two years.’’ With its ‘Non Stop Mobile’ scheme, Tata has roped around 50,000 subscribers in Gujarat. ‘‘Of this, Ahmedabad accounts for nearly 20 per cent,’’ say officials. A Reliance Infocomm spokesperson says, ‘‘Around 1,500-2,000 Amdavadis are opting for the three-year scheme every day. In fact, we have run out of stock, so people have opted for advance booking.’’ Yet, Reliance has upped the ante with a new prepaid scheme of Rs 1,949 which offers free talktime of Rs 1,000 along with LG handset 2430. The cellphone is worth Rs 2,799. This scheme has been launched exclusively for Gujarat, said an official. Tata Indicom is expected to announce a counter scheme soon. Reliance has also launched another offer wherein the subscriber will get an LG 2340 worth Rs 2,500 along with free talktime worth Rs 2,500 for only Rs 2,500. Validity period is three months, said another official. To attract more customers, Tata has already launched two schemes: per second billing and its 0-1-2-3 plan. Under the 0-1-2-3 plan, Tata charges nothing for local calls to Tata cellphones; Re 1 per minute to Tata fixed phones and other local cellphone numbers; Rs 2 per minute to other fixed phones and Rs 3 per minute for outgoing STD calls. With so many offers being thrown their way, subcribers find themselves in a win-win situation. http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=160839
