anujit 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 (edited) Frankly I'm quite disappointed with the IPB search tool. In short it s**ks. And it's probably one of the reasons why people keep repeating topics. Cant we integrate Google search with the forum? Google's contextual search is spectacular and will surely give much much better results. Also I'm sure it can be customised to search key fields as well such as date ranges, topic names, persons name and the like. As the forum grows a good search tool is essential otherwise we're just piling up information that we can never use! What say you programmers? ashoksoft 83 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 The idea is not bad, but the search capablities of IBP is as good as any. Google has contextual search (esp designed for online ads). For eg if u want to search for Nokia 6600, all u need to search for is "6600" try it out ... u will have better results Since that was what u wrote this topic down for (SMS .. SMS ... PM ... Message ... how to shut down n6600 ... ) Cheers Ashok Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
raccoon 53 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 I second what anujit said. I'v been quite frustrated in the past by the IPB search. After that if I coudn't find something I wanted, Id just abort the idea ...rather than run those near useless searches... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Arun 795 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 IPB's search feature does seem limited when used initially, but as per experienced users, it does give quite accurate results when queried correctly. To be frank, I don't get much expected results with it too, as I'm yet to master it. Hopefully, the next release of IPB should address this. Meanwhile, I'll look into third party search scripts Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
tanveer 59 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 I too think the searches returned are weird and inaccurate, there ought to be some better and more accurate tools. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

anujit 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2005 (edited) Dude I know I can do a site search through command lines in google search or through the google toolbar. But not everybody has the Google search (TOOLBAR) or knows command line parameters. I'm suggesting a tool that EVERYONE can use! Vishal Gupta 4 Report post Posted November 24, 2005 I think what anujit was trying to say, is that not everyone knows these parameters which can be used with Google search for better results... Yes! There r a lot of such gr8 parameters, like site, filetype, inurl, allinurl, etc..., which can be used for better searching. PS: I'm very much satisfied with IPB search feature. I found the IPB search feature the BEST among all other discussion boards. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
RajanPERT 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2005 I'm very much satisfied with IPB search feature. I found the IPB search feature the BEST among all other discussion boards. Yes IBP is good. But we have to become expert to use this search feature. A new user may face some difficulty to use this. Thanks and Take Care! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
linuxguy 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 A quick solution to satisfy both points of views would be to add Google Search to the website. Use the following code from google: <!-- Search Google --> <center> <FORM method=GET action="http://www.google.com/search"> <input type=hidden name=ie value=UTF-8> <input type=hidden name=oe value=UTF-8> <TABLE bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><tr><td> <A HREF="http://www.google.com/"> <IMG SRC="http://www.google.com/logos/Logo_40wht.gif" border="0" ALT="Google" align="absmiddle"></A> <INPUT TYPE=text name=q size=25 maxlength=255 value=""> <INPUT type=submit name=btnG VALUE="Google Search"> </td></tr></TABLE> </FORM> </center> <!-- Search Google --> The code has to be used as a whole. Yes, even the <!-- Search Google --> comments. For more info, go here: http://www.google.com/searchcode.html Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Arun 795 Report post Posted December 8, 2005 Here is a beta version for RIMweb Search using Google Google currently has 625 pages indexed from rimweb.in - I'm now trying to implement Google Sitemap Generator so that Googlebot can crawl through the whole site efficiently and that should mean more indexed paged.
