abhay 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2005 Airtel, Orange, BPL Below StandardsThe Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently conducted drive tests in Mumbai, to assess the quality of service of the networks of Airtel, Hutch and BPL. The study found that the network service quality of the three service providers, is not as per the prescribed standards. TRAI found that though the subscriber base of cellular mobile services has grown from about 9.7 lakh in March, 2002 to 50.95 lakh by March, 2005, the quality of service of the networks of Airtel, Hutch and BPL is not as per the prescribed standards in respect of the coverage, interference and call drops at several locations. All the service providers, in common, have coverage problems in Navy Nagar/ Army Cantonment, Colaba; HPCL Refinery, Mahul; Aarey Milk Colony, Goregaon; Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Deonar; Air India Colony, Kalina; Vashi Check Naka; and Mantralaya (Secretariat). These areas are currently covered remotely by sites from the neighboring locations. Due to the coverage from remote Base Stations (BTSs), the signal strength in these areas is barely sufficient to make a call. The signal strength in the Navy Nagar area drops to -105 dBm due to thick vegetation, and the interference due to reflections from the sea water also results in poor voice quality. To provide coverage in this area, cell sites have to be put inside the defense land. The operators are not able to cover the road in the Aarey colony, which connects the Western Express highway to Powai Lake and to the Eastern highway, due to the national reserve forest for which permission is required from Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Department. TRAI also found that Airtel, Hutch and BPL need to have a dominant server right on the Vashi Bridge to avoid interference. Attempts made by the service providers to put cell sites in these areas, by approaching the concerned Government Departments, Defense and civic authorities have not been fruitful. TRAI maintains that GSM service providers have already crossed the benchmark for allocation of additional spectrum, and as such allocation of further spectrum may have to be considered. The Authority maintains that it is taking up the mentioned issues with concerned authorities for effecting improvements in networks. TRAI has been receiving a number of complaints from consumers regarding call drops, poor coverage, etc in various cities across the country, especially in the metro cities, where the number of subscribers has increased many fold during the last five years. http://www.techtree.com/techtree/jsp/artic...9337&cat_id=

Harshad 1 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 I am not being rude, but then these sort of discussions I would like to call RIM chauvinists. Coz all are SAME. No more, no less. Just a few days back, RIM subscribers were complaining of poor network & call drops. Some people were even talking about repeated compaints and yet no action taken in regards of "BTS" (have no idea what that is, must be something related to network). What I have found after some months on this forum is people belittling other service providers. Is RIM so competitive, so much ahead of others ? If that was so, why would the rest of the providers have so many subscribers. BPL's problem at Mantralaya has been solved it seems - my friend uses BPL and the network is at its optimum best. Orange and Airtel will join the bandwagon soon... Lets not be so unfair to others and look down on them !
linuxguy 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 RIM's network is terrible. Near santacruz people dont get networks in some buildings. My mum faces that problem quite regularly! Her office is there... They were supposed to add a new cell site. But dunno if that has materialized......
SexyGurl 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 You shouldn't have opened this thread, if you so paranoid about reading anything adverse about the specific operators. (and avoid the articles along the same lines, in the general press too). ... Sorry, if this news spoilt your day. But that's hardly a reason, why we shouldn't freely comment, as we feel like. Further, you are arguing against stated facts ... without any verifiable facts and your deluded notions. Want any help?
raccoon 53 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 Network has improved big time in my area, after complaining to the Chairman's office! No more listening to those ten thousand leaving / entering service area messages all day. Well, it still does happen ...but very seldom now ...and late at night... I've managed to get a external booster from RIM for solving that issue And these network issues are with every operator in some or the other area... Hope they work hard on resolving it! SexyGurl 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 I didn't find any prob. at Santa Cruz (whenever there, traveling to mumbai). In Delhi, more than 95% of the time I find 5-bars for the network strength. (But Delhi-Cantt is not well covered .... traveling a particular stretch of road .. gives me 0-bars ... so no signal). But GSM is pure cr*p. I can NEVER forget a job-interview which got scr*wed up becoz of I f*kking couldn't understand what the interviewer was saying. ! CAUTION TO EVERY JOB SEEKER: NEVER TAKE A TELEPHONIC JOB INTERVIEW OVER A GSM MOBILE.
