abhay 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2005 DTH may broaden broadband baseUnable to achieve the forecasted 30 lakh broadband subscriber base this year end, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is looking forward to Direct to Home (DTH) service providers to begin broadband services and contribute in expanding the broadband base. "Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) and DTH can penetrate the broadband to a big extend in remote areas. DTH sector, with its rapidly increasing customer base and three to four new players expected to make a foray, is an area we are looking at," Trai Advisor (Converged Networks) S N Gupta said while addressing the Telecom India 2005 Summit here today. Presently none of the DTH service providers have started these services, for which they are already permitted to provide 'Receive Only Internet Service', once they obtain Internet Service Protocol license from the Department of Telecommunications, he said. The Broadband Policy 2004 has already drawn instructions in this regard, which said the internet service providers (ISP) licensees would be permitted to allow customers for downloading through DTH, after obtaining necessary permissions, he added. In a fresh assessment, the telecom regulator said the broadband subscriber base would reach only seven lakh by this year end as against the projected 30 lakh. Presently, there are around one million DTH subscribers in the country with one private player DishTV, besides state-owned Doordarshan. In a bid to expand the broadband base, state owned telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) reduced their monthly broadband service charges to Rs 250 and Rs 199 respectively. Besides this, to overcome low PC levels, BSNL has also launched a pilot scheme of providing personal computer with broad and connection at a monthly installment of Rs 500-700. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1307284.cms

abhay 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) a very good news for india's DTH future INSAT-4A launched; in good healthIndian space scientists on Thursday received signals of INSAT-4A, which was launched by Ariane-5 rocket from Kourou in French Guyana and said the health of the satellite is 'good'. "Satellite signals have been acquired by our station (Master Control Facility) at Hassan (in Karnataka). Signals are good. Health of the satellite is good," Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman G Madhavan Nair said soon after the launch. "INSAT-4A is the most advanced, heaviest and most powerful satellite (of India)," Nair said, describing its launch as a "very important milestone in the history of ISRO". It carries 12 ku band and 12 c band transponders, which would add to the capacity of 150 transponders that the INSAT series possesses today, he said. "So, this is going to revolutionise the TV broadcasting directly to the home and improve the entertainment scenario in India," he said. According to ISRO officials in Bangalore, 12 ku band transponders provide around 140 to 150 DTH channels. The satellite is expected to be operational by next month end, they said. http://www.rediff.com/news/2005/dec/22insat.htm i suppose when INSAT-4A starts its operations the sky is clear for TSKY and likes Edited December 23, 2005 by abhay
