Indians top in sending photo via MMS

The use of value added services may still be low in India, but when it comes to sending photos via MMS, Indian males are the most avid users in Asia. And those on post-paid connection are more likely to use Multi Media Messaging (MMS) for sending photos than their pre-paid counterparts, reports Rashmi Pratap in Mumbai.

“You are more likely to MMS a photo in Asia if you are an Indian, male, aged 25 to 36 and on a post-paid contract,” says an international survey on mobile user habits.

In India, about 37% subscribers on post-paid contract are likely to MMS photos, while only 27% on pre-paid connection will do the same, according to the survey by SmartTrust, a mobile device management firm. Pre-paid users form a vast majority of consumers in India and most of them are younger with limited spending power.

“This explains the larger number of post-paid users opting for MMS,” says author of the survey, Tim De Luca-Smith, Communications manager at SmartTrust. As against India’s 37%, only 27% of those on post-paid connection in China will use the MMS for sending photos and 15% in Hong Kong.

In China, subscribers at the age group of 16-24 are likely to MMS. The lowest users of MMS are self-employed males in Hong Kong, aged between 25 and 34. Further, high and middle management users are most likely to use MMS in India.

“Students are poor users,” says the survey, which covered 15 countries, including five in Asia — China, Japan, India, South Korea and Hong Kong. Although MMS can be used to send various types of multimedia files, photos taken with the phone’s in-built camera remain the number one source of content.

But nearly 50% of the Indians store photographs on their phone, while 20% store it on their computers. A total of 30% send it via MMS, while around 17% use the computer to distribute photos. Indian users are also most likely to print their photos than any other Asian market covered in the survey.

The survey notes that the use of value added services is still low in India. Only 13% of users have made a GPRS connection ever. Even fewer, 7% had made a WAP connection. However, this is in line with the low penetration of GPRS/WAP-enabled devices in the region.

While almost 99% of the Indian consumers use SMS, only 13% have ever made use of picture multimedia messaging and only 11% have used music player on cellphones, it adds.

Globally, just 43% of MMS-enabled handsets have ever been used to send an MMS. “About 15% of users have had problems when trying to use their operator’s MMS service,” says Mr Luca-Smith.
