Build your own cell phone

It has been the dream of many developers to build cell phones that are as flexible as computers. It is only natural for enthusiasts to come up with innovative ideas such as building their own phones. Adding to the delight of cell phone tinkerers, the prices of components of cell phones have come down drastically over the last few months. This gives impetus to their efforts to build their own cell phones.

Currently, cell phones do not allow such things like connecting disparate lists of people into overlapping groups. They also do not allow people to view who is online. But the cell phone Surj Patel, an enthusiast, is building allows precisely that and more. He is blending applications like LinkedIn or MySpace into the system with a phone’s address book.

In order to comply with regulatory requirements, the hackers have to use components approved by FCC, the regulatory authority in the US. This also includes parts originally meant for embedded systems such as surveillance cameras or Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers.

Among others, small screens and keypads are easy to acquire. Linux based computer systems form the brain of the cell phone. After all the parts are assembled, the homemade phone needs a SIM card, that stores information such as the phone number, the carrier network information and personal data. This can be taken from any phone based on Global System for Mobile (GSM) or can be purchased. It is difficult to adapt to other carriers’ equipment.

Phone twiddlers are optimistic that their work will spark greater response. They feel that if hardware can be harnessed well, software developers can come up with more solutions. They are optimistic that much more progress is possible in this sector and that a lot of exciting developments are bound to happen in time to come.
