NID professor designs new, cheaper mobile

AHMEDABAD: A Professor at Ahmedabad's National Institute of Design (NID) has designed a mobile handset that would cost barely Rs 800.

The unique phone facilitates outgoing and incoming calls to and from only three (or limited) programmed numbers. Sources said that the professor has already applied for a patent, and that he is talking to a big multinational mobile phone manufacturer for marketing the gizmo.

“The idea is simple. If you want to stay in touch with your maid, chauffeur or children but cannot give them a usual mobile handset, which is expensive and could be easily misused to pile up huge bills, here's a solution,” says a source at NID. When contacted, the professor confirmed to ET that he had applied for a patent.

He said his product would hit the market by the second half of '06. The phone has no display screen. It may have only four keys, three of which may be programmed to make and receive calls from three different numbers and one key may be used to pick or receive a call, the professor says.

Talks have also been initiated with a leading mobile company. If materialised, the mobile-maker may launch the phone and pitch it strongly against LG's new phone for kids. Although, this phone may be projected more as a utility phone not just for kids but for people of different age groups.

At present, LG is going gung-ho on its Migo kids phone, that has similar utilities but has a design appealing to kids. The kids phone by LG that mainly targets the parents, may also get shared minutes plan. Neither the talks with any manufacturing company nor with the service provider have been concluded, but with increasing fierce competition between the telecom operators, one can surely expect more of such innovative products to hit the market.

I think such restriction is very much possible.

If there's no dialer, but only 3 built-in dialling "combinations" (coud'nt think of better word here), then there's no way you could dial any other numbers, safely assuming there is no data port available in such a handset.

It is possible. I remember some pics of handsets that had not the numberpad, but just some 3-4 keys, maybe for different numbers. Perhaps u could get it programmed from service center or data cable.
