lostjournal 7 Report post Posted March 21, 2006 R World goes Hindi Reliance becomes the world's first operator to offer mobile data services in more than one language on the same handset DAKC (Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City), Navi Mumbai, March 21, 2006 Reliance Infocomm has introduced R World in Hindi making it possible for millions of Indians to access the popular mobile services with hundreds of every-day-use applications in Hindi. The entire click-and-browse user experience, R World is known for, is offered in Hindi with menu and navigation that users can change "on the fly". This potentially addresses the needs of a large segment of Indian customers, who are comfortable with Hindi language, in what's the world's first attempt at providing mobile data offerings in more than one language - all on the same handset. The Hindi option comes at no additional charge to the users and requires no handset change or upgrades or a visit to a WebWorld or a WebWorld Express. India has 10 states with Hindi as predominant language and 450 million people speak this language. The software platform that drives R World has been made ready to handle all major Indian languages starting with Hindi and plans are afoot to make R World available in other regional languages as well. "This is another giant step that we have taken towards connecting with the real India. The first was when we announced our mega rural expansion plan in January," says Mahesh Prasad, President, Application Solution Group, Reliance Infocomm. "R World is very popular among our customers with the English user interface itself. However, with this new initiative we will be able to address the need for mobile content and the entire user experience in regional languages, which we are trying to quickly fill." Consequently, subscribers from the hinterland can access, browse, and select popular R World services such as Mobile TV, Movie videos, Music, News, Astrology, Sports, Games and other services in Hindi. "Globally, there are a few countries where more than one official language is used and no service provider has ever offered mobile data services in multiple languages at the same time on the same wireless handset. We are proud to be the first operator in the world to commence such offering," added Prasad. What is significant in this initiative is that customers can use Hindi R World on handsets that are as old as the company is and the R World suite of services are retrofitted to work with older handsets as well as the new phone models. Over 7 million Reliance subscribers will be able to avail of this facility immediately. Customers can change the settings to use R World in Hindi by entering R World and selecting "RWorldHindi" under "Hot N New". And, when using R World in Hindi, to toggle back to English, one has to simply click on "Set English" in "Hot N New" section. In preparation to localize R World in different Indian languages, Reliance is providing text based News in eight regional languages and some mobile games in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarathi. R World has worked wonders with it's over a billion pages of information, rich media content and video clips. Thanks to its wide range of applications it has endeared itself to users from all walks of life. Its applications include TV news clips, ball-by-ball cricket score and other information, latest movie clips, city and TV guides, railway reservations, banking, bill payment, examination results.
