There isn't any problem if you scan your PC with Antivirus software and at the same time use the PC for browsing, accessing files, etc. Even if the antivirus couldn't remove a virus because of that, it should atleast detect the virus.

The problem is that the loaded program is "locked" by OS when it is being executed. So it cannot be cleaned. Alternatively, (and this happened mostly during the DOS era) the program on the disk was cleaned but the infection still was there in the memory. So when the program was closed. The virus wrote itself back to the disk.

Although virus architecture has changed its generally good practice to let it run by itself with minimum programs loaded in the memory.

Even I think it shouldn't create a problem. Only thing, it will considerably slow down the speed of working of computer.

My experience in this regard, may give u some ideas I think. I used one free version of a commerical antivirus in my computer. It has on access scanning capability. It is able to identify the latest version of redolf virus in my disk, but cant remove it. Then I used clamwin( http://www.clamwin.net ) opensource antivirus to remove the virus. When clamwin is about to handle the virus file, bcoz of the onaccess scanning of the commercial antivirus, it first identifies and prevents the virus file from being accessed by clamwin. It is not able to remove the virus and it is not allowing clamwin also to remove it. Then I stopped the on-access scanning capability of the commercial antivirus. Then I used clamwin, which removes the redolf virus very easily. Such situations may be more worst if two softwares has on access scanning capability, that is like the situation u have. Clamwin don't have onaccess scanning facility, which is its advantage and disadvantage. Suppose if the OS locked the program, you restart the computer in safe mode and scan with clamwin. 99% you will succeed in removing even established viruses in your computer.

Besides that, its good to remember that scanning utilities require heavy disk acess ...and if you use 2 simultaneously, both would need to access different areas of the disk causing very heavy and inefficient disk accesses. This will reduce the life of ur hard disk. Also, processor overload may cause additional delays! Because of this and other reasons, no way is it reccomended to use 2 scanning utlities simultaneously. In fact its best even to avoid using the PC for other purposes ...esp. disk intensive ones. Hence, it may be best to schedule ur scanners to run when ur away from the PC saving both time and HDD life ...though your interaction may be required if malware is found ...depending on your settings.
