Reliance Infocomm launches '1world 1number' international roaming on CDMA and GSM networks

DAKC (Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City), Navi Mumbai, March 29, 2006

Reliance Infocomm today launched seamless inter-standard international roaming service - 1World.1Number, with single number on international CDMA & GSM networks. This means that even when Reliance customers are roaming on a GSM network - for instance, in Europe - the caller line identification of the customer would still be his/her Reliance number. Reliance is the first telecom operator in India to launch inter-standard roaming.

The new inter-standard roaming service is a huge bonus for Reliance customers as they will no longer have to resort to call-forwarding when traveling from a CDMA network to GSM network and vice versa. With 11 major CDMA networks and 340 GSM networks covered under 1World 1Number service, Reliance now becomes the number 1 service provider in India in terms of offering the widest international roaming coverage and lowest roaming rates.

Reliance customers traveling abroad can subscribe to the service at Reliance WebWorlds. A SIM Card will be provided to the customer, which used with a suitable GSM handset, will enable customer to roam on GSM networks. Customer can use CDMA handset for roaming on CDMA networks.

I am not sure how common CDMA users in India would benefit from this? If this is available within India [between GSM-CDMA providers] it makes sense. But 'One World One Number' etc...will not benefit many CDMA customers in India.

Why can't they focus on establishing EVDo in their networks? Why can't they modernize their handset procurements and give free hands for handset manufacturers? Stabilize their billing system etc...
